Hawaii Route 50 begins in Lihue and heads west. The road passes through the only major shopping center on the island at the intersection with Route 58. From there, the road passes through the Kauaian countryside and several small communities. There are numerous agricultural farms and plantations set up along the route. The only major sugar cane plantation on Kauai is grown along the route west of Waimea [ [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=travel&res=9B0DE4DA163AF93BA15755C0A961948260 AN ISLAND THAT SUMS UP HAWAII] "New York Times", June 28, 1987, Retrieved February 10, 2007] . West of Waimea, the road becomes noticeably dry and at times, barren.
