The paper was originally founded in the 1990s under the name The Dayton Voice. In the early 2000s, the paper's name was changed to Impact Weekly due to the pressure of a lawsuit from the nationally known newspaper, The Village Voice. In the mid 2000s, the paper's name was changed once again to the current moniker.
Similar to many alternative newsweeklies across the country, the Dayton City Paper focuses on performing and visual arts, music, film, dining, literature, and politics. The paper also features a modest rotating roster of additional weekly syndicated columnists and cartoonists including Amy Alkon's "The Advice Goddess", Chuck Shepard's "News of the Weird," Matt Groening's "Life in Hell," and Don Asmussen's "Bad Reporter." The papers qualified roster of staff and freelance writers authoritatively deliver the editorial quality its readers demand.
