The Field of Mars Fires of
2002 saw devastation to some 56 hectares of forestry in theSydney suburb of Gladesville,Australia . Fires closed in on homes located on Finch Avenue, East Ryde and Kim Street, Gladesville being evacuated.Origins
Whilst no charges were made with regards to the Field of Mars Fires, it remains speculation that it was the product of an arsonist who entered the reserve on the afternoon of December 5th lighting a small scrub fire near the Field of Mars Cemetery. The fire quickly spread to cover the entire reserve and by 6 December the reserve was blackened.
Damage
There are around 300 species of plants in the reserve which provide home to numerous animals including
echidna s and smallmarsupial s.Expense
Water cranes were used to exercise caution, however patrolling fire brigadiers let the fire burn as saw no immediate harm or damage to any property or person. There was however close monitoring and perimeters formed.
Coverage
The fires received much television coverage with sky news patrols. It was to be one of the closest fires in relation to central Sydney. People flocked to the surrounding streets of Thompson St, Higginbotham Road, Westminster Road and Kennedy St of Gladesville which boasted as prime vantage points.
