Hendrik Marsman (
Zeist ,September 30 1899 –English Channel ,June 21 1940 ) was a Dutch poet and writer. He drowned while escaping toGreat Britain , when the ship he was on was torpedoed by a German submarine.His poetry is vitalistic and expressionistic, and (fear of) death, as a metaphor for defeat in life, is a recurring theme.
His most famous lines are from the poem "
Herinnering aan Holland ", 'Memory of Holland' (translated):"Thinking about Holland, I see broad rivers moving slowly through endless lowlands"
In 2000, the
Dutch people chose thispoem ‘Dutch Poem of the Century’.Awards
