They are actually an "offshoot" of the
Ba'ku , a race of people seemingly identical in appearance to humans. While the Ba'ku long ago chose to reject advanced forms of technology such aswarp drive , the beings that would eventually become the Son'a were belligerent towards this philosophy and left the Ba'ku home world bitterly, after attempting to forcefully take over the colony. The Son'a are distinct in their appearance, as they often have cloaks covering their heads, along with skin that has been stretched over their faces. They use genetic manipulation in order to prolong their lives, and must constantly have manipulation/skin-folding sessions in order to survive.
It appears that the Son'a and Ba'ku represent two sides of one race. While the Ba'ku are peaceful and choose not to utilize advanced technology, the Son'a are rather hostile and embrace technology. The Son'a, as previous allies of the
Cardassian s, were militarily tied to their side in theDominion War , and have been known to produce the narcoticKetracel White , which implies that they also have economic ties to the Dominion. They travel on boomerang/blade-shaped ships, their battle cruisers are equipped with isolytic subspace weapons, which are dangerously unstable and were thus outlawed by the secondKhitomer Accords . In addition to this, they have conquered two lesser races, the Tarlak and the Elora, and have long since integrated them into their culture as a labor class. In the "" episode "Penumbra", the
Vorta Weyoun orders Damar to send ships to protect a Son'a colony from the Federation.References
