Cape Bonavista

Cape Bonavista

Cape Bonavista is a headland located on the east coast of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Cape Bonavista is located at the northeastern tip of the Bonavista Peninsula, which separates Trinity Bay to the south from Bonavista Bay to the north.

The nearby town of Bonavista takes its name from this historic landmark.

The lighthouse on Cape Bonavista was built in 1843 using the lamps and reflectors from the Bell Rock Lighthouse in Scotland.cite web|url=http://www.lhdepot.com/database/uniquelighthouse.cfm?value=980|title=Cape Bonavista lighthouse|accessdate=2008-01-25] The lighthouse was replaced by a steel tower in 1966 and the original lighthouse has been turned into a museum. John Cabot may have landed there on June 24, 1497, although other locations make the same claim.
