He was educated at the University of Southern California and later followed Margaret Atwood and Brian Moore to Harlequin Enterprises, where he trained writing action-adventure novels.
His 2006 book, Made to Break: Technology and Obsolescence in America, documents the history of disposability (including the phenomenon of planned obsolescence) in America.
Made To Break won the International Publisher's [IPPY] Gold Medal for best environmental book of 2007 and was released in a paperback edition in October 2007.
