- Heinz Zemanek
Heinz Zemanek (born [“I was born on 1st January 1920 in Vienna, but already at the age of a few weeks I travelled to Domzhale near Ljubljana where my father had accepted a position in an iron factory. When in 1924 he declined to accept Yugoslav citizenship, we had to leave the country.” Zemanek 1985, p.4]

The name (Austrian German for 'May Breeze') is a word play onWhirlwind , a famous computer developed by the MIT between 1945 and 1951.In 1954, he supervised a thesis, in the course of which the
LRR1 was developed, probably the only logical machine ever built in Austria. The Vienna Lab
The IBM Laboratory Vienna (later known colloquially as "the Vienna Lab" among the computer software research community) was founded in 1961, as a department of the IBM Laboratory in Boeblingen (near Stuttgart), Germany. The original name was "Science Group Vienna" and Prof. Heinz Zemanek was the manager of it from the very beginning. [Bandat 1985, p.53] Zemanek was appointed an
IBM Fellow [Zemanek 1985, p.8] in 1976 and his management responsibility for the Vienna Lab came to an end [Bandat 1985, p.58] .Additionally, he was involved in creating the formal definition [“A Formal Definition of a PL/1 Subset” was produced as TR 25.139 on 20 December 1974. The five authors of the report were Hans Bekič, Dines Bjørner, Wolfgang Henhapl, Cliff B. Jones, and Peter Lucas. See LNCS 177, Bekič and Jones, 1984. p.107-155.] of the
programming language PL/I .He still is active as a lecturer at the
Vienna University of Technology , which also has a lecture hall named after him, giving two lectures every year. He is a long-time member of theInternational Federation for Information Processing , and was its president from 1971 to 1974.The
Heinz-Zemanek-Preis , an award for extraordinary accomplishments in the field ofcomputer science , was named after him. He was himself awarded with theKardinal-Innitzer-Preis , a different Austrian award, for his life's accomplishments in 2003. In 2005, he was awarded the Austrian honorary cross for arts and science, first class.Heinz Zemanek was International Commissioner of the
Pfadfinder Österreichs from 1949 to 1954.Literature
