The City of Cairns Council was a local government region in
Far North Queensland ,Australia until 1995 when it merged withMulgrave Shire to becomeCity of Cairns .History
The Cairns Divisional Board governed the community and surrounding land from 1879 until 1885 when it was proclaimed a municipal borough. The Cairns Divisional Board evolved into the Cairns Shire Council in 1902 and it became the Mulgrave Shire Council in 1940.
Cairns officially became a town in 1903 and, when it achieved city status in 1923, the City of Cairns Council was broken off from Mulgrave Shire.
In 1995 when the Queensland Government approved the amalgamation of Cairns City and the Mulgrave Shire to become the greater City of Cairns, with its southern boundary near
Miriwinni and north to include Ellis Beach.
