Waterloo is the second largest city in the Western Area of Sierra Leone and a suburb of Freetown. The population of Waterloo was estimated at 19,750 [http://population-of.com/en/Sierra-Leone/04/Waterloo] in 2006. Waterloo lies 18 miles east of Freetown [http://www.thepoint.gm/art%20&%20C,%20TT,%20E%20&%20W97.htm.]

History

Waterloo was settled by soldiers from the 4th and 2nd West India Regiment from Jamaica and Barbados who had fought in the Battle of Waterloo in 1812. Many of the Jamaicans and Barbadians intermarried with Liberated Africans and settled down in Waterloo. The descendants of these soldiers and the Liberated Africans are the Creole of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
