Camerata Chicago

Camerata Chicago

Camerata Chicago is a Chicago based string orchestra which had its debut in early 2003. The orchestra performs a wide array of classical and romantic works as well as newly commissioned pieces. Camerata performs while standing, allowing for an intense musical freedom and visually compelling live performances.

History

Camerata Chicago was founded by director Drostan Hall with the aid of his colleagues and wife Dorthy Hall, current concertmaster of the orchestra. The ensemble generally consists of fifteen strings players, expanding when necessary to perform works that demand large string sections or small symphonic orchestras which require wind and brass. The ensemble also incorporates three or four young musicians to perform alongside experienced professionals. Camerata brings together some of the finest musicians in Chicago and stands as the city's only professional string orchestra.

Performances

The current concert series includes works by Shostakovich and Dvorák with performances at the Harris Theater, College Church, and Northern Illinois University.

"One of the top five chamber orchestras in America"
Shmuel Ashkenasi, Vermeer Quartet, who has played in the orchestra as a soloist.

"I was very impressed indeed with the very high quality of the playing."
Sir Charles Mackerras, CH AC CBE
