USS "Donner" (LSD-20) was a "Casa Grande"-class
dock landing ship of theUnited States Navy , named for the Sierra Nevada'sDonner Pass , where theDonner Party became snowbound in the winter of 1846–47."Donner" was launched on
6 April 1945 by theBoston Navy Yard , sponsored by Mrs. W. V. Alexander, Jr.; and commissioned on31 July 1945 , Lieutenant Commander P. V. McPeake, USNR, in command.1945 – 1960
"Donner" transported
landing craft from Norfolk toNew York , then operated boat pools along the east coast until3 November 1946 when she sailed for theMediterranean and similar duty. She returned to Norfolk on24 December for duty along the coast and on voyages to NS Argentia, andLabrador . From31 January to10 March 1948 she sailed in theCaribbean for a large scale landing exercise by the 2nd Fleet. The "Donner" was placed out of commission in reserve12 August 1949 .Recommissioned
15 September 1950 after the outbreak of theKorean War , "Donner" cruised to the Mediterranean for duty with the 6th Fleet between5 March and6 July 1951 . Operating from Norfolk she took part in training exercises in the Caribbean and made several cruises to the waters offGreenland for replenishment and cold weather operations. From17 July to7 October 1956 , she made two voyages from Norfolk to resupply theDEW Line stations."Donner" participated in the
International Naval Review atHampton Roads on12 June 1957 , then sailed for the Mediterranean on28 August forNATO landing exercises inTurkey . She returned to Norfolk on8 February 1958 and resumed training operations there and in the Caribbean. "Donner" prepared for deployment to the Mediterranean during theLebanon landings, but her orders were canceled when the crisis eased.During the summer of 1959, "Donner" took part in

23 December 1970 , and struck from theNaval Vessel Register on1 November 1976 . She was laid up in theNational Defense Reserve Fleet , James River, atFort Eustis , Va., from October 1981 until November 2005, when she was removed for scrapping by All Star Medals ofBrownsville, Texas .References
