Adolf Etolin

Adolf Etolin

Adolf Karlovich Etolin (born Arvid Adolf Etholén) January 9, 1799 in Helsinki, Finland, died March 29, 1876 in Elimäki, Finland). He was an explorer and administrator employed by the Russian-American Company.

Some historians believe that Etolin traveled from Russia to America with Vasily Golovnin in the "Kamchatka" in 1817, but no records currently known corroborate this.

He served from 1818 to 1825 as a ship master. Etolin was part of a group that surveyed the Bering Sea in 1822 to 1824. He was the adjutant for the governor of the Russian American colonies in 1834. He became governor of the Russian-American Company colonies in 1840 to 1845. He was a member of the board of the Russian-American Company in Saint Petersburg, Russia from 1847 to 1859.

An island in Alaska, Etolin Island, is named after Etolin, as are a cape, a point, and a mountain.
