List of Suikoden III characters

List of Suikoden III characters

This is a list of characters in the PlayStation 2 role-playing game "Suikoden III". Due to the varying order the scenarios can be played in, this list is laid out politically. The main characters of the game are Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe. Thomas and the Masked Bishop are also viewpoint characters, although they are somewhat more minor.

108 Stars of Destiny (Suikoden) also has a list of these characters, laid out by their order in the Stars of Destiny instead.

ix Clans

While called the six clans, only five of them are relevant in "Suikoden III". The Safir Clan is invaded by Harmonia in the early days of the war and defeated.

Karaya

Hugo

Hugo (ヒューゴ, "Hyũgo") is one of the three main viewpoint characters of "Suikoden III". Hugo was born soon after the Dunan Unification War (the war that took place during "Suikoden II") was concluded; his father is unknown, but speculated to be a member of the Highland forces that his mother Lucia fought with. When Hugo was four, he bonded with the wild griffin Fubar who happened upon the Karaya Clan.

Hugo's Chapter 1 begins with him being sent as an emissary to Vinay del Zexay to deliver a ceasefire offer from Lucia. He is 15 at the time and joined by Fubar, his childhood friend Lulu, and the retired Duck Clan warrior Sergeant Joe. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry with the murder of Lizard Clan Chieftain Zepon and the subsequent reprisals against the Zexen, and Hugo and his companions find themselves as fugitives running from the Zexen Knights. Upon returning back to Karaya, Hugo discovers that his village is in flames, the result of a retreating envoy of Zexen Knights from the treaty meeting. Lulu attacks Chris Lightfellow and is slain in the process; Hugo can then attack Chris as well or only ask why, depending on the player.

With Karaya burnt, Hugo seeks to reunite with the other Karayans who fled to the Great Hollow. Thanks to Lilly Pendragon's interest, he learns of the True Fire Rune and becomes involved in the search for the Flame Champion, thinking that perhaps he could reunite the Grasslands against the threat. Hugo travels to Budehuc Castle, the Chisha clan (where he defeats Sasarai in a duel while pretending to be the Flame Champion), and eventually the Flame Champion's hideout in the search. As a main character, the player may choose Hugo to be the new Flame Champion and bear the True Fire Rune. In the manga, Hugo is the one who chooses to become the Flame Champion. If Geddoe is the Flame Champion; Hugo takes the True Lightning Rune; if Chris is the Flame Champion, then Hugo will take the unsealed True Water Rune in Chapter 4.

After the war, he helps rebuild Karaya and succeeds his mother as the chief of the Karaya Tribe. Hugo uses a dagger as his weapon.

Lucia

Lucia (ルシア, "Rushia") is Hugo's mother and the chief of the Karaya clan. Lucia is a fierce warrior who uses a bullwhip and a Rage rune in battle. She sees Chris as something of a rival on the battle field. The cross paths a few times during the game and half of the time they end up fighting, either physically or verbally and sometimes both. Lucia cares very deeply for Hugo and desires her son to become a strong warrior like herself and lead the Karaya clan after she steps down.

Aila

Aila (アイラ, "Aira") is a member of the warrior tribe from Karaya Village who ends up joining Geddoe's mercenary unit. She has an affinity with the spirits, and tracks Sarah after she brings her proclamation of doom to Karaya village. In chasing after Sarah, she is away from Karaya village when the attack comes, and ends up joining Geddoe's unit and traveling with them for the duration of the game. Since Aila is young, she can be brash at times and charges after Sarah to avenge the destruction of her village every chance she gets. While with Geddoe, Aila gets somewhat addicted to soda. She helps the Flame Chapion attack Sarah and breaks the sorceress's concentration while during one of the early battles with Luc.

Aila uses a bow as her weapon and bears a Shield Rune and an Earth Rune.

Other Karayans

Fubar (フーバー, "Fũbã") is Hugo's griffin and companion throughout much of his adventure. Fubar is highly intelligent and after saving Hugo’s life from wolves, is accepted into the Karaya clan as a warrior. Hugo is capable of riding Fubar in battle and unleashing powerful attacks on anyone that stands in their way.Lulu, though not a Star of Destiny, accompanies Hugo on his initial trip to Vinay del Zexay. Upon seeing Karaya burnt, he charges Chris Lightfellow and is slain by her. Lulu has an adventurous spirit and desires to see the world. It is his death that causes Hugo to seek more strength and leads to Hugo’s learning of the Flame Champion. Luce is Lulu's mother, as well as the mother of two other (deceased) sons. Jimba is an adopted son of sorts to Luce, though he is not a Karayan in truth. She is infamous among the Karayan’s for her bear hugs. Luce does not fight but is a good cook. Anne opened a pub in Karaya, but it was burned to the ground the very same day by the Zexen Knights. She reopens the bar in Budehuc Castle. Beechum is Lucia's second-in-command and a veteran fighter with a scar over one of his eyes Beechum is highly protective of both Lucia and Hugo and does everything in his power to protect both of them from harm. He carries the traditional one-handed Karayan sword into battle and acts as a squad leader of Karayan fighters. He has much distrust for the Zexen Knights due to the tensions between Zexen and the Grasslands..

Chisha

Sana (サナ, "Sana") (not a Star of Destiny) is the Flame Champion's wife. She is the elder of the Chisha village and its chieftain. Sana explains to Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe the Flame Champion's history and how he decided to lay down the True Rune so that he could age and live with Sana.

Lizard

The chief of the Lizard Clan is Zepon, who does not have a major role in the game and is not a Star of Destiny. Zepon knows Geddoe from earlier times, and is assassinated by Yuber around the same time that Geddoe comes to visit. Zepon is succeeded by Dupa, an aggressive warrior quick to blame the Zexens. Dupa is the one who reorganizes the Lizard Clan and attacks the Zexens Knights. Dupa is a very proud warrior and has difficulty understanding humans, though he suggests being Hugo's father to Lucia at one point. Shiba is a top rate fighter among the Lizard clan and assists Dupa with work for the clan. He remains behind to guard the Great Hollow while Dupa is signing the peace treaty with the Zexen Knights and sees the fake Chris with his own eyes. Incidentally, Shiba is from another clan of Lizards living in the south, which explains his drastically different appearance from the others in the Grasslands. Bazba also assists Chief Dupa. Despire being the smallest of the three due to some sort of a back condition, he is just as powerful as Dupa and Shiba. Bazba trains all the Lizards in the Great Hollow and is very knowledgeable about combat, even offering advice on Skills to the player when prompted. He also seems to be the object of many female Lizards' desire. Peggi is a loud and aggressive blacksmith of the Lizards. He appears like he is always angry but it only appears that way when he speaks. Peggi is incredibly picky about his tools. He became a blacksmith because he was gravely injured in a battle. Peggi has the habit of always saying "Noble" before the name of the Flame Champion.

Duck

Sergeant Joe (full name: Jordie) (ジョー軍曹(ジョルディ), "Jõ Gunsõ(Jorudĩ)") is a battle-hardened veteran who is Hugo's mentor. He accompanies Hugo for almost all of his journey. Sgt. Joe also has an unnamed wife and two children. In combat, he uses a halberd with a head shaped like a fish. Sergeant Joe is well known as the bravest warrior of the Duck clan. As a veteran, he rarely looses his composure in battle. Rhett and Wilder are two other Duck warriors who can act as guides for Chris in her Chapter 3, and practically idolize Sgt. Joe. Rhett has a slightly fat appearance and always has a wool scarf that he made himself. Wilder is considered the wisest of the Duck clan.

Alma Kinan

The Alma Kinan clan is composed entirely of women; many members are said to be able to see spirits and most fight using crossbows. Yuiri (ユイリ, "Yuiri") is the chief of Alma Kinan. Yumi (ユミ, "Yumi") is her assistant and fellow warrior. Yun (ユン, "Yun") is a seer who foresaw her own death.

Yun and Yumi set off to the Chisha village due to Yun foreseeing the Harmonian attack. There, they convince Chris Lightfellow to take them back to the Duck Clan's village, where Yun wishes to find Caesar Silverberg and Apple to help in the village's defense. When they arrive back in Chisha, the Harmonians attack. With Chris's help, Yun and the villagers managed to hold off the Harmonian army until Hugo, whom Apple had arranged to help, arrived with his reinforcements. Together, they save Chisha.

Yun requests that Chris to go to the Alma Kinan village with her and Yumi, somewhat ominously implying that it was her "second-to-last task." In the Kuput Forest they encountered Yuber and defeat him.

Upon entering the village, Chris meets Yuiri. Chris discovers that an upcoming ritual that involves human sacrifice to release the seal on the True Water Rune. Chris runs to find Yun and discovers that Yun was indeed the sacrifice. Chris interferes, and though Nash, Yuiri, and the whole of the Alma Kinan village are against her, she is determined to stop the ritual until Yun herself intercedes.

Yun takes Chris to the side, and tells her that she isn't worried - this is her destiny. While Chris frets and fumes over the stupidity and futility of being sacrificed for some "superstitious" practice, Yun tells Chris that she is "serious but kind", and that while Yun has only known Chris personally for a short time, she's been seeing her in her dreams since she was a child. This makes her think of Chris as almost an old friend. In the manga, it is expanded as Yun reveals what she has learned about Chris and her family through Chris' estranged father. As a parting gift before the ritual begins, Yun presents Chris with one final prediction concerning where her father will be and that he will die soon. After an interruption from Luc, Sarah, and Yuber, Yun finishes the ritual and sacrifices herself to release the True Water Rune's seal. This greatly affects Chris later; if Chris becomes the Flame Champion, though she detests being the "Silver Maiden" and "Silver Hero," she decides to accept these appellations as a sacrifice to herself to become a rallying symbol.

Zexen Confederacy

The Six Knights of Zexen (also called Six Mighty Knights of Zexen) are the preeminent commanders of the Zexen Army.

Chris Lightfellow

Chris Lightfellow (クリス ライトフェロー, "Kurisu Raitoferõ")' is one of the three main characters in "Suikoden III". Chris was born to Wyatt Lightfellow, at the time a member of the Zexen Knights, and his wife Anna in the town of Vinay del Zexay. Chris's early childhood was idyllic, and she dreamed of becoming a knight one day so that she might fight at her father's side. However, her father left on an unknown mission one day and never returned, with the official word being that he had died in battle. Anna fell ill and died soon after.

The now-orphaned Chris became more determined than ever to follow in her father's footsteps, and enrolled at the Zexen Service Academy at age thirteen. Despite criticism from her fellow knights-in-training that her success was due to nepotism and was impressive only in light of her gender, Chris excelled, graduating in three years and becoming squire to the Knight Captain Galahad.

During a battle against the Six Clans of the Grasslands whom which Zexen had perennial squabbles, both Galahad and his vice-captain Pelize were killed, leaving Chris to give the order to attack and lead Zexen to victory. Chris became the acting captain and leader of the Six Knights of Zexen as a result, and she became a cherished hero in the eyes of the people, who call her the "Silver Maiden". Chris is less than thrilled with the ensuing onslaught of adoration.

Chris is 22 years old at the beginning of Chapter 1, in which Chris and her knights travel to the Grasslands to request a truce. Unbeknownst to her is that some members of the Zexen Council are being bribed by Harmonia, and this is all part of a larger plot with the potential to remove someone perhaps too popular. After agreeing to a truce with the Karayan chief Lucia, Chris leaves, only to receive the report that the Grasslanders are now attacking her forces. Incensed at this sudden act of betrayal, Chris and Salome decide to set fire to Karaya Village to allow her troops to escape, since that would force the Karayan forces to withdraw. However, the intent was only to lightly burn the village as a scare tactic and save her men, not to slaughter all the inhabitants. By the time she approaches the village personally, it is in blazes with many of the non-combatant inhabitants dead, along with some of her knights (some of both sides having actually been killed by Luc and Sarah, and the rest by knights led by Borus). Hugo's party returns around the same time, and Chris runs Lulu through with her sword when Lulu attacks the mounted Chris.

While recuperating from this string of events, Chris is invited to Iksay Village by her fellow knight Percival for a festival. There, Chris meets Nash Latkje. Nash knows that Iksay is about to be attacked by Grassland forces; he apparently also knows that Chris's father Wyatt, thought to be dead for seventeen years, is actually alive. Chris also duels Jimba at Iksay, and Jimba hints that he may have been the one to kill her father Wyatt, although is evasive. After helping protect Iksay, Chris follows Nash into the Grasslands under the pretense of gathering information for Zexen, determined to learn the truth about her father. She protects Chisha village against a Harmonian attack in the process, and visits Alma Kinan village to protect the seal on the True Water Rune.

Chris is distasteful of both the title "Silver Maiden" and the hero adoration she has received, often correcting characters when they call her the former and sighing when met with adoration; this contrasts with her deep-seated love for the Knights and for the Zexen people. If Chris becomes the new Flame Champion, however, she takes up her artificial titles as the "Silver Maiden" as her own sacrifice to better lead and inspire the united Grassland forces. If Chris does not become the new Flame Champion, she inherits her father's True Water Rune at the Sindar Ruins at the end of Chapter 4.

Chris uses a sword in battle and bears a Phoenix Rune in addition to the True Rune acquired later.

Wyatt Lightfellow

Wyatt Lightfellow (ワイアット ライトフェロー, "Waiatto Raitoferõ") is the father of Chris Lightfellow and a member of the core of the original Fire Bringer, along with the Flame Champion and Geddoe. Wyatt bore the True Water Rune, one of the 27 True Runes. Although much of Wyatt's history is clouded, Wyatt seems to have been born in the Zexen area around IS 384. When Wyatt was 23 years old, his friend the Flame Champion began his campaign against Harmonia in the First Fire Bringer War. After 18 years, the first Fire Bringer War comes to an end with no clear victor in IS 425. The Grasslands stopped the Harmonian expanse but not at the cost of several villages. Afterwards, Wyatt takes up the role of helping establish security for the blossoming nation of the Zexen Confederacy. During this time he proved a skillful knight and managed to start a family with Anna Lightfellow, from whom he likely adopted his own surname Lightfellow. As he possessed a True Rune, Wyatt did not age during this time. Eventually, perhaps due to the increasing obviousness of his lack of aging, or perhaps due to fear of Harmonian spies, Wyatt left Zexen and quietly joined the Karayan Clan under the pseudonym Jimba. As Jimba he became a big brother to youngsters like Hugo and Lulu, as well as adopted son to Luce. Lucia, the clan chief, began to view him as a valuable asset to the Karayan Village, investing much trust to him.

During the events of "Suikoden III", Wyatt/Jimba is 89 years old. He still keeps his Zexen armor about, and asks that Hugo deliver a message to Chris that her father died honorably in battle. Later, Jimba meets Chris at Iksay Village during the Lizard attack and claims to be the one who killed her father (true, in a sense), while hinting he knows more as to the issue. After the Harmonian attack in early Chapter 4, Wyatt goes to unseal the True Water Rune, but is mortally wounded by Luc's band, though he does wound Luc in the process. If Chris is not the Flame Champion, he bestows the True Water Rune to her; if she is, then Hugo receives it. Regardless, Chris sees a glimpse of Wyatt's memories in the Rune.

Jimba uses a sword in battle; presumably, Wyatt did as well.

Other Knights

Salome Harras (サロメ ハラス, "Sarome Harasu") is the chief strategist of the Six Knights of Zexen. He is 31 years old and bears a Water Rune. Salome is the one who decides to attack the Karaya Village as the best option to bail out the Knights after the Karayan attack over the (perceived) Zexen betrayal- a sound tactical decision, but one with unintended consequences as the knights pillage and burn considerably more than expected, thanks to Sarah's meddling. Salome is also a friend of Geddoe's, like many others, and fills Geddoe in on Zexen internal struggles in Geddoe's Chapter 3. In Chapters 4 and 5, Salome works with Caesar as a strategist for the Fire Bringer forces. Salome is the one who organizes the downfall of the Zexen council after it becomes apparent that they are working with Harmoia to destroy the Grasslands. He was also the first to recognize Chris as the Captain of the Zexen knights. Salome uses a mace for a weapon.

Borus Redrum (ボルス レッドラム, "Borusu Reddoramu") is the "Swordsman of Rage" of the Knights. He is 25 years old. Borus was the one who helped slaughter the Karayans in the Zexen counterattack at the end of Chapter 1, albeit aided by Sarah's anger-inducing field. He denies it to Chris initially, though. He uses a sword and bears a Sword of Rage rune. He is extremely devoted to Chris, perhaps almost to a comic degree, and is easily upset with anyone who does treats her in too familiar a manner, such as Nash Clovis, or by any comments that made regarding her appearance or her ability. Borus was raised in a wealthy family but has since grown distant from them and refuses to give the reasons why.

Percival Fraulein (パーシヴァル フロイライン, "Pãshivaru Furoirain") is viewed as something of a playboy by his comrades, and generally is found in the company of women. He is from Iksay Village, and accompanies Chris there for the festival when the Lizards counterattack. Percival uses a sword in battle and bears a Water Rune. He is known as the "Swordsman of Gale" and is 26 years old. When working, Percival is always somewhat reserved in nature. As a commoner by birth, Percival had to earn the right of becoming a Zexen Knight. He is also considered to be the best horseback rider of all the Knights.

Leo Gallen (レオ ガラン, "Reo Garan") is an axe knight who was ordered to find Hugo in Hugo's Chapter 1 along with Percival. Leo’s armor is custom made with spikes on the shoulders to make him look more ferotious in battle. He was in charge of protecting Chris' predescessor, Knight Captain Galahad, when he was killed and Leo continues to hold himself accountable for the captain’s death.

Roland Lesaurus is the only elf of the knights who left his homeland to live in Zexen, and fights with a bow and arrows. Roland has a calming presence. Although he is not a leader, the elf will organize other soldiers when needed. Roland rarely speaks with anyone but Nei.

Louis Keeferson (ルイス キファーソン, "Ruisu Kifãson") is Chris's squire and not a knight yet. His father is a friend of Chris' family and helped take care of her after she lost her parents. Louis is the youngest of seven brothers and as such, he can not inherit his family's house.

Other Zexens

Nei (ネイ, "Nei"), Toppo (トッポ, "Toppo"), and Shabon (シャボン, "shabon") are buskers found in Vinay del Zexay. Recruiting them allows a sound test of sorts to be activated. Guillame is a corrupt merchant up to various evil deeds during the course of the game, though he eventually joins the Stars of Destiny anyway. Dominic (ドミニク, "Dominiku") is an armorer who would like to sell his self-confessedly bad Mole Armor. Augustine Nabor is a vain duelist who bears the Red Rose rune.

The Knights of St. Loa (St. Loa being the main religion of Zexen) include Melville (メルヴィル, "meruviru"), Alanis (アラニス, "Aranisu"), and Elliot (エリオット, "Eriotto"). They also live in Vinay del Zexay. In Hugo's Chapter 1, Hugo may aid the Knights in searching for Melville's disappeared father Billy (ビリー, "Birī"), whom the corrupt merchant Guillame claims ran off as a liar. Alanis's father is a traveling merchant, and she leaves Vinay del Zexay in Chapter 2 in a cutscene that can be seen by Geddoe or Chris. Alanis is later found in the Lizard's Great Hollow. Billy himself, as a treasure hunter, will come to Budehuc castle if a sufficiently valuable statue is available. Reuniting father and son, and the Knights, will allow the new Flame Champion to recruit all of them permanently.

At Brass Castle, several Stars of Destiny can be found. Belle is a young mechanic. She spends most of her time fiddling with Gadget Z, a variant from the Gadget built by Meg in earlier "Suikoden" games. Ernie is a tutor at the library. Scott is a trader in the Deer Antler trade with Vinay del Zexay. Arthur publishes a newspaper, and is seeking a scoop as to Hugo's escape from Brass Castle in Chapter 1. Jeane is the runemistress at Brass Castle. Jeane has appeared in every single "Suikoden" game to date, and is no more revealing of her secrets in "Suikoden III" than in any of her other appearances.

At Iksay Village, Mel is a ventriloquist (possibly?) who is often seen conversing with her doll, Branky, and smashing Branky against nearby objects when Branky is "bad." Barts is a farmer. Gordon is a vain shopkeeper who only associates with "gentlemen" and extremely high class females (such as Chris).

Harmonia and allies

Harmonia is a gigantic, populous nation to the east of the Grasslands. It controls several other regions that are not part of Harmonia proper; its main base in the Grasslands area is the trading city of Caleria. Le Buque is also controlled by Harmonia.

12th Defense Force

The Twelfth Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force Unit is a mercenary unit guarding Harmonia's borders. They have a high reputation among their peers thanks to their efficient job in the Higheast Rebellion three years prior to Suikoden III. This incident happened when rebels within the Higheast Province of the Dunan Republic rebelled and tried to revive the Highland Kingdom. Its original members were Geddoe, Ace, Joker, and Queen; later on (after the Higheast Rebellion, but before the events of "Suikoden III"), Jacques joined. Though not a member, Aila travels with the Defense Force after Karaya Village is sacked by Borus and the Zexen Knights.

The 12th has a rivalry with the 14th Defense Force. The whole Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force is based out of Caleria.

Geddoe

Geddoe (ゲド, "Gedo") is one of the three main protagonists and captain of the Twelfth Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force Unit. Much is unknown about Geddoe, by nature a private man who does not freely offer many details of himself. He was friends with the Flame Champion and the person who would later be known as Wyatt Lightfellow and Jimba. The Flame Champion's wife, Sana, claims that Geddoe was always the idealist of the group, but it is unclear what exactly his ideals were. After the first Fire Bringer war was finished with the True Fire Rune killing large numbers of people on both sides, the three went their separate ways. Unlike the Flame Champion, Geddoe chose to continue to bear his True Rune, the True Lightning Rune. During this time period, Geddoe was part of the negotiations settling the status of Budehuc Castle (a fact that allows Eike, the Castle's librarian, to recognize him).

It is unknown what Geddoe did in the intervening time, but by the time of "Suikoden III" he is the commander for Harmonia's Fringe Defense Force and 112 years old. However, his loyalties to Harmonia are clearly questionable at best. From his experience in the first War as well as his travels since, Geddoe has a vast network of acquaintances as well as impressive knowledge of etiquette. He counts among his friends Salome of the Zexen Knights, the chief of the Lizard Clan, and an information dealer in Caleria. During the course of the game, Geddoe investigates rumors of the resurgence of the Fire Bringer — a somewhat ironic assignment, since he is a member himself. Instead, he turns his efforts toward determining who is stirring up passions in the Grasslands area with the attack on the Lizard clan as well as the razing of the Karaya Village. This eventually leads to him investigating the Masked Bishop in Le Buque, whom he (correctly) believes is the source of the problem. His mission is eventually changed to locating the True Fire Rune, another task in which he already knows the solution. After helping stop the attack on Budehuc Castle (and revealing to Joker his possession of the True Lightning Rune), he decides to return to the Flame Champion's hideaway for the Rune, not for Harmonia's sake, but to stop the Masked Bishop.

As a main character, it's possible for Geddoe to choose to become the new Flame Champion and lead the united Grasslands / Zexen forces against Harmonia. If he does so, then Hugo takes the True Lightning Rune. Regardless, Geddoe aids the new Fire Bringer against Harmonia, and later Luc's band.

It is unknown how Geddoe lost his eye. Duke seems to believe that he has a rivalry with Geddoe, although Geddoe is fairly blasé about the matter. It's not made clear, but it is possible that Geddoe passed information to Harmonia that the Masked Bishop was working against Harmonian interests, though the point becomes moot after Luc steals Sasarai's True Earth Rune, guaranteeing Harmonian support.

Geddoe uses a sword in combat, and bears a standard Lightning Rune as well so as not to be obviously using a True Rune.

Ace

Ace (エース, "Ẽsu") (real name unknown) is 34 years old. He is the accountant of the group, and was given this job because no one else wanted it. He was born in Vinay del Zexay, and served as a mercenary for Gilbert during the Dunan Unification War. Other than that, Ace divulges little information about his past which he prefers left behind when he joined the Defense Force. Beside his fighting ability, Ace manages the unit's administravie duties and collects their pay from Harmonia

Ace is known to love drinking, gambling, and women, and is quite amorous around the opposite sex. He is often the butt of many a joke, especially from Joker and Queen.

Ace had a relationship of sorts with Elaine from the 14th Unit. He had given her a valuable gift once as a token of favor, but she played hard-to-get and was angry with him. Now their relationship has changed, and he is rather cold to her. Elaine still has a slight infatuation for him, however.

Ace actually enjoys reading, and those around him find it unusual that he does so. He prefers pulp adventure novels. He tried his hand at writing one for the Fire Bringer, although he wrote it under the alias Hitman Bravo. The novel itself is of questionable quality, but Elaine seemed to like it.

It is theorized that he sides with Geddoe against Harmonia because his hometown is in danger from the Harmonian Army, along of course with the fact that the rest of his unit followed Geddoe as well. After the war, he continues as the accountant for the group.

In battle, Ace uses sai as his weapons along with a Double Tusk rune. He learned about sai from a book he read, and had a blacksmith make a pair.

Joker

Joker (ジョーカー, "Jõkã") (real name Wang) is a 45 year old hard-drinking member of the Defense Force. He is also the resident rune specialist of the team; he is the one most dedicated to rune usage, and he recognizes that Luc has the True Wind Rune upon meeting him. Geddoe is the only other member of the group known to know Joker's name (in the manga, Nash Latkje also knows Joker's real name). Joker and Ace are known to lob constant insults at each other, though each of them respects the other enough to trust with their lives.

Joker fights with his fists and bears a Fire Rune.

Queen

Queen (クイーン, "Kuīn") (real name unknown) was born an aristocrat in Sanadia. Sanadia was conquered by Harmonia, and she was forced to serve as a slave as a child. Like others, she abandoned her real name upon joining the Defense Force and uses an alias. She considers Elaine of the 14th Unit her professional rival. Queen doesn't like spicy food, and is a vegetarian, though she gives up vegetarianism at the end of "Suikoden III". Queen uses a single-edged saber as her weapon and bears a Ripple rune. She is 31 years old during the events of "Suikoden III". She is the only female member of the 12 Southern Frontier Defense Force. Queen is the most literate of the Defense Force and has a keen ear for music.

Jacques

Jacques (ジャック, "jakku") is a recent recruit to the 12th Frontier Defense Force. He is 22 years old, the youngest of the group. He doesn't talk much at all and tends to wander off on his own. While he was purportedly out hunting for rabbits during the Karayan Village attack; he secretly shot an arrow from far away to help his comrades, and never even took credit for it. He is sometimes rather protective of Aila, a fellow archer and near the same age compared to the older members of the 12th. Geddoe recruited Jacques as soon as the two meet for the Defence Force, recognising the young man's skills. Jacques rarely changes his face facial expression even when he is happy.

Jacques uses a crossbow as his weapon and bears a Baronda Hawk rune.

14th Defense Force

The Fourteenth Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force Unit is also a mercenary unit guarding Harmonia's borders. While possessing a strong reputation as well, they are seen as second to Geddoe's 12th. The 14th is led by Duke. Duke sees Geddoe as a professional rival after losing to Geddoe in a Tournament. Nicolas served under Duke's father until he died and now serves under Duke himself. Of the 14th Defense Force, Nicolas is the least hostile to the 12th Defence Force. Nicolas carries both an ax and a large wooden shield. Elaine has a rivalry with Queen and was once courted by Ace. Elaine is competitive with other women over physical beauty. Gau is a kobold who fights with a spear. Of the four members of the 14th Defense Force, Gau is the least friendly. Gau was saved from death once by Duke and has served Duke ever since. Gau is the only kobold who is without a tail.

The 14th is also investigating rumors of the Fire Bringer. During the initial Harmonian attack near Chisha, they are rallied along with other Harmonian armies to defeat the initial resistance. However, after Luc and Sarah kidnap the citizens of Le Buque, the members of the 14th realize that Geddoe's suspicions of the Masked Bishop were correct, and they come to their aid.

Harmonia

Hamonia's leader, Hikusaak, collects True Runes. As one person cannot bear multiple True Runes, he has created clones of himself to bear the runes instead. Finding the True Fire Rune would be a prize catch for advancement in Harmonia.

asarai

Sasarai (ササライ, "Sasarai") is a bishop of Harmonia and "brother" in a sense to Luc, as they are both clones of Hikusaak. Sasarai was born with the True Earth Rune. He commands the expeditionary force to search for the Fire Bringer and the True Runes, though he is suspicious of the Masked Bishop's plans.

Sasarai has an assistant, Dios, who aids him in his plans.

Nash Latjke

Nash Latjke (ナッシュ ラトキエ, "nasshu Ratokie") (as Nash Clovis) is a Harmonian spy working in the Grasslands and member of the Howling Voice Guild. He aids Chris Lightfellow as she searches for her estranged father while he investigates the Fire Bringer and the Masked Bishop.

Le Buque

Le Buque (ルビーク, "Rubīku") is a town that was once allied more towards the Six Clans. After the First Fire Bringer war ended in a bloody draw, however, Harmonia asserted control over Le Buque, and the Six Clans did not contest it. Residents of Le Buque are third-class citizens of Harmonia. They are known for their proficiency with the gigantic insect-like Mantors.

Franz (フランツ, "Furantsu") is the best Mantor trainer who spent a large portion of his life in Harmonia proper, receiving a Harmonian education. Franz is willing to do anything to help Le Buque become second-class citizens, even attacking the Grasslands. Due to his compliance with Harmonia, Franz is neglected by most of the other villagers of Le Buque. He is 26 years old, and his mantor is Ruby. He is romantically involved with the 25 year old Iku and cares for her greatly; Iku acts as the nurse for the mantors in Le Buque. He is seen as more pro-Harmonian than most in town, and hopes along with Iku for Le Buque to be one day granted second-class citizenship in Harmonia. To that end, he aids Harmonia in their assault on the Safir and Chisha clans, and helps order other Le Buque citizens into supporting the assault as well. Franz uses a spear.

Budehuc Castle

Budehuc Castle, or Lake Castle, is a small castle that is rather run-down at the beginning of "Suikoden III". It bears some rather odd features, such as a ship that crashed into it, and a musty monster-infested basement. Due to its neutral position on the border between Zexen and the Grasslands, it is chosen as the base for the second Fire Bringer.

Thomas

Thomas (トーマス, "Tõmasu") is the master of Budehuc castle and 15 years old during the events of "Suikoden III". He was born in the Northern Outlands and lived with his mother. When his mother died, he went to the Grasslands to find his father, Lowma, who was a member of the Zexen Council. Lowma did not give a warm welcome to his illegitimate son whom he had no use for and could damage his reputation. Seeking to remove him in a way that was at least honorable on the face for a nobleman's son, Thomas was made master of the rundown Budehuc castle. Thomas greatly doubted his ability to manage the castle initially.

Soon after Thomas arrives, he finds that the finances for the castle are extremely small, explaining the poor upkeep of the grounds. Not wishing to reduce an already depleted staff, Thomas embarks upon a scheme to attract more business to the castle. Martha, an older Grasslander, recalls when business thrived and the castle was a free trade zone between Zexen and the Grasslands. Thomas decides to seek out merchants to come set up shop at Budehuc, realizing that this would probably bring down the wrath of the Zexen merchants on a competitor biting into their sales. Thomas and a select few servants- Cecile, Piccolo, and Juan- set out to inform others that Budehuc is welcoming anyone who wishes to open a shop there. (Through cutscenes, Thomas can meet all three of the other main characters and convince them to also inform travelers that Budehuc is looking for shop owners).

The later parts of Thomas's chapters deal with the Zexen Council sending their knights to interfere with Thomas's plans. Thomas is eventually asked to give the castle a new name, since no one could pronounce "Budehuc" correctly and Thomas was the real owner of the castle after standing up to the Zexen Council. Eventually, Thomas offers his castle for use by the second Fire Bringer in Chapter 4 after the Harmonian attack.

Thomas is the chronological successor of Riou as the "Tenkai Star", the first position among the Stars of Destiny, traditionally held by the main character in the "Suikoden" series who have the task of gathering the remaining stars under their lead. Whereas his predecessors were all distinguished war heroes, Thomas creates a contrast by playing the role of a normal person who does his best within a difficult situation, as he not only has no real military expertise nor does he bear any special Rune, but he is also not designated as the leader of the eventually formed army. While the other viewpoint characters start at more elevated levels, such as Hugo at level 5 and Chris at level 20, Thomas and Cecile both start at level 1.

In combat, Thomas uses a sword. He has a combination attack with Cecile entitled "Best Effort" which leaves Thomas unbalanced.

Budehuc staff

Cecile (セシル, "Seshiru") inherited both her armor and position as Captain of the Guard of Budehuc Castle from her late father. She has complete faith in Thomas's role as Lord of the castle and is quite devoted to him. She also highly admires Chris Lightfellow and aspires to one day be like her in both ability and physical beauty. She is 12 years old during the events of "Suikoden III" and uses a spear in combat. She bears the "War Horse" rune.

Sebastien is the bookkeeper and innkeeper of Budehuc. Eike is the librarian, and well-studied enough to know that Geddoe was an original signatory to the agreement creating Budehuc Castle. Juan is the sleepy master of the training center. He is often seen chewing leaves, which are suspected to be the cause of his drowsiness. Fellow fist fighter Emily later becomes his assistant. Martha is an aged but shrewd Grasslander who sells lottery tickets and still knows the history of Budehuc. She is the one who arranges the selling of Budehuc Castle to Lucia in exchange for a 200-year lease when a Zexen councillor attempts to assert control of it. Piccolo is Budehuc's fortune teller, albeit a rather bad one. Muto is the kobold warehouse keeper.

Outlanders

Some members of the Stars of Destiny come from lands beyond the Grasslands; others have unknown origins, but are clearly travelers in the town in which they are found.

Lilly Pendragon

Lilly Pendragon (リリィ ペンドラゴン, "Rirī Pendoragon") is the daughter of the president of the Republic of Tinto. She is traveling the Grasslands to investigate rumors of the Fire Bringer's resurgence and to find the True Fire Rune; she recruits Hugo as a fellow traveler. Samus and Reed are retainers of Lilly's, sent by the Republic of Tinto to guard her and aid her search for the rumors of the Fire Bringer. Unfortunately for them, they have to follow Lilly's rather selfish commands.

Caesar Silverberg

Caesar Silverberg (シーザー シルバーバーグ, "Shīzã Shirubãbãgu") is the main strategist for the second Fire Bringer forces and a student of Apple's. He is 16 years old during the second Fire Bringer war, and a member of the famed Silverberg family from the Toran Republic- Leon Silverberg is his grandfather, George Silverberg his father, Mathiu Silverberg his deceased uncle, Odessa Silverberg his deceased aunt, and Albert Silverberg his brother.

Caesar initially offers his aid to Thomas and Hugo while at Budehuc Castle when attempting to escape from the surrounding Zexen army. He later shows up at the Chisa Village to aid the new Flame Champion. He firmly believes that the new Flame Champion is the only one who can properly rally the Grasslands forces, and also has a reasonably pessimistic outlook on the prospects of a war between Harmonia and the Grasslands - Caesar believed that it would take not just Zexen cooperation, but an alliance of all the states in the region to stop Harmonia. (Obviously, after Luc's treachery was discovered by Harmonia, this was not needed.)

Caesar is the youngest and most inexperienced of the strategists, though still possessing the talent his family is known for. Initially appearing to be a lazy and disinterested teenager, he possesses a keen and watchful mind and while he never demonstrates the elaborate plans of his predecessors, his cunning misdirections and ability to see the situation stripped of emotional attachment serve the Flame Champion well. Unlike some other strategists in the "Suikoden" series, he is well supported by Salome and Apple, fine strategists in their own right whose experience counterpoints Caesar’s precocious genius.

Apple

Apple (アップル, "Appuru") is a strategist and historian. She participated in both earlier wars in the "Suikoden" games, and assists Caesar Silverberg.

Viki

Viki (ビッキー, "Bikkī") is a somewhat clueless lady who bears the Blinking Rune, which allows teleportation. She seemingly accidentally teleports to the mountain path near Caleria. In addition to Viki, Young Viki appears on the same mountain path as well once Viki is recruited. Young Viki is considerably more mature than Viki.

Edge

Edge (エッジ, "Ejji") is a 19 year old mercenary for hire found in Le Buque village. In the past, Edge's home village was attacked by vampires and his older sister was taken away. Shortly after that, Viktor and Flik arrived as they were investigating rumors they had heard of the vampires attacking the village. Edge asked if he could tag along as he wanted to become a great swordsman himself. Viktor agreed and lent him the Star Dragon Sword. Together they defeated the vampires and Edge personally killed the head vampire, saving his sister. Upon hearing of the Harmonian Army invading Dunan, Viktor agreed to let Edge borrow the Star Dragon Sword for a bit longer and they both left.

Aside from the legendary Star Dragon Sword, Edge bears a Lightning Rune.

Fred Maximillian

Fred Maximillian (フレッド マクシミリアン, "Fureddo Makushimirian") is the 23 year old captain of the Maximillian Knights. He is one of only two members (the other being Rico, Fred's servant), but he aims to lead the Knights back to their past glory which they had under his grandfather Maximillian. Fred is aided by Rico, his overburdened assistant, who seems to carry much of Fred's equipment despite being considerably smaller. Fred and Rico both aid Hugo in Chapter 3.

Amusingly enough, in theater acts at Budehuc Castle, Fred is systematically incapable of changing his name to the character he plays. For example, as Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet", he will heroically speak to 'Juliet' while pridefully calling himself Fred Maximilian.

Fred Maximillian uses a one-handed sword as his weapon and bears a Sword of Thunder Rune.

Other Outlanders

Mua (ムーア, "Mũa") is a Free Knight of Kamoro traveling with Hallec, a barbarian from the Northern Outlands. They both aid Hugo in Chapter 3.

Doctor Tuta is a traveling doctor who took part in the Dunan Unification War of "Suikoden II". Mio is a nurse who assists him. They are initially found in Iksay Village, though Tuta continues his travels for a time afterward. Watari is a ninja for hire, also found initially in Iksay Village. Ayame was sent to kill Watari, but if Watari succeeds in a duel against her, she decides for reasons unexplained to the hero to join Watari.

Several Stars of Destiny basically show up at Budehuc Castle's doorstep. Jefferson (ジェファーソン, "Jefãson") is a military-seeming man who hands out titles. Shizu (シズ, "Shizu") is an elevator repairperson who comes to repair Budehuc's elevator.

Twaikin (トワイキン, "Towaikin") is a dwarven digger found in the Great Hollow. Estella (エステラ, "Esutera") is a mage found traveling Alma Kinan, looking for the legendary all-male village of Gordius (revealed in "Suikoden V" to be in Falena, a good distance away). Rody is her student.

Found in Caleria, Nadir (ナディール, "nadīru") is a theatre director. Mike is a card game playing gambler. Futch is a dragon knight from the Toran Republic area. He participated in the wars of the earlier "Suikoden" games and was in Caleria to track down Sharon (シャロン, "Sharon"), Captain Millia's daughter who had gone missing. Futch brings his new dragon, Bright (ブライト, "Buraito"), with him.

Hortez VII (ホルテス, "Horutesu") is a very directionally confused traveler who perennially gets lost on his way to Budehuc Castle. Wan Fu (ワン・フー, "Wan Fũ") is an indebted, drunk fighter found at Chisha village.

In the Duck Village, Kidd (キッド, "Kiddo") is a self-proclaimed detective who has a rather inauspicious start in a "murder" case. Mamie is a cook who can also be found there. (Both are traveling humans.)

Emily (エミリー, "Emirī") is the daughter of Ronnie Bell, from "Suikoden I". She is looking for strong people to arm-wrestle with and fights with her fists in combat. Sanae Yamamoto is the daughter of Freed and Yoshino Yamamoto from the Dunan Unification War. She uses a naginata.

Some Stars of Destiny are found in open places. Kenji (ケンジ, "kenji") is a fitness fanatic and jogger generally found near Vinay del Zexay or Budehuc castle, jogging the paths between them. Goro (ゴロウ, "Gorõ") is looking for fine baths, and runs the bathhouse at Budehuc Castle. Landis (ランディス, "randisu") is a member of the Winghorde who dresses in black and wields a scythe, like the Grim Reaper, and seems fond of scaring people. He may be found in Kuput Forest. Kathy (キャシー, "Kyashī") is a horse rancher found on the plains between Karaya and the Duck Village. It is hinted at in Kidd's profiles that Billy (Melville's father) may be her father as well, as her father "travels around the world on treasure hunts." Koroku (コロク, "Koroku") is a dog found at Mt. Hei-Tou near Budehuc.

Destroyers

Luc (ルック, "Rukku") is the instigator and leader of his group, sometimes called the Destroyer forces. Luc, like Sasarai, is a clone of the Harmonian leader Hikusaak and has carried the True Wind Rune within him since birth. Luc eventually escapes Harmonia to live with Leknaat and aids in the events of the first two "Suikoden" games. After seeing a vision of the future in which humanity is wiped out in the struggle between the runes, he decides that fate is currently fixed. To break this fate, he must sufficiently disrupt the order created by the 27 True Runes; his plan is to destroy his own True Wind Rune. To do so, he will need the combined powers of many True Runes, and seeks to gather the other Elemental Runes from the Grassland region. With Albert's help, he returns to Harmonia and becomes a bishop and then stirs up trouble as the Masked Bishop, seeking to use the Harmonian army to flush the Runes out and capture them. To Harmonia, this will seem to be a simple attempt to gather the True Runes for Hikusaak; only the other Destroyers know that he wants them for himself to enact his plan.

Sarah (セラ, "Sera") was born in Harmonia with great inherent magical powers that caused her to be seen as a witch. She was raised in a shrine, but later was rescued by Luc as a child and has lived with him at Leknaat's tower for most of her life. She is in love with him and intends to stick with him to the end; however, she wishes to aid Luc's plan in such a way as to cause the fewest deaths possible. To that end, she seeks to reduce the death toll by such measures as warning Karaya Village that they will be attacked soon and to leave. Sarah teleports the Destroyers about, casts illusions to help start the war (for instance, at the Great Hollow to make it seem as if Chris attacked), sets up the anger-increasing field at Karaya village, and summons large amounts of monsters to act as an army (sometimes cloaking them as Harmonian soldiers).

In contrast, Yuber has no particular affection for any of the other characters. However, he knows that Luc's plan will require a lot of killing, something that Yuber enjoys, and decides to aid in the carnage. Yuber acts as the muscle of the Destroyers, fighting the other Stars of Destiny multiple times.

Albert Silverberg (アルベルト シルバーバーグ, "Aruberuto Shirubãbãgu") is the main strategist for the Destroyer forces, and Caesar's older brother (24 years old compared to Caesar's 16). Additionally, he manages the political aspects for the Destroyers. Albert is seeking power in the Harmonian bureaucracy, and believes that aiding Luc's plan will help him in this. How, exactly, is never made clear; presumably the destruction of the True Wind Rune and the Grasslands would wipe out various other contenders for power such as Sasarai and Dios, or perhaps Albert intended to spin the situation such that he was the hero. This plan is also a chancy one at best, as no one is sure of the true effect of destroying a Rune; Harmonia itself may well have been destroyed as well, or perhaps even the entire world.
