- St. Gilgen International School
The St. Gilgen International School is a new day and
boarding school for students 11-18 years, opened on 1 September 2008. In the first year grades 6-9 are available, with grades 10 to 12 being added in successive years. The academic programme will be committed to the framework of theInternational Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Years programme and will seek IBO authorization immediately after opening in August 2008. The school is located in
St. Gilgen nearSalzburg . A small, peaceful village set on a lakeside in the beautiful Austrian lake-district. Salzburg is most famous as the birth-place ofWolfgang Amadeus Mozart , while the village of St. Gilgen was the birthplace of his mother. Music and the arts play a most important role in life in this area, as do the pursuits of a variety of outdoor activities including skiing, various water sports, golf and riding. With access to superb outdoors and cultural pursuits the school has outstanding opportunities. Building of the beautiful lakeside campus began in July 2007 and was completed in July 2008. Academic courses will be taught in English, with German and other languages on offer. For Middle Years students whose native language is not English intensive English instruction can be provided. As special points of emphasis Film and Media Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and European Union developments will be integrated in the curriculum. Special arts projects, music master classes, and performing arts activities will be supported by artists in residence, special visitors and close links to music academies in Salzburg. Mother-tongue maintenance will be a high priority, supported by tutors and/or distance learning provisions.
Scholarships
In order to be accessible to a greater variety of children, the school will award partial and full scholarships which will be funded by the school, individuals, and companies. This scholarship programme is an important element of the basic philosophy of the school.
