"Who's That Girl", a modern-day adaptation of the
1938 Howard Hawks film "Bringing up Baby ", features a strait-laced character engaged with a woman he does not love, while a wild woman distracts him from his wedding preparations. Originally titled "Slammer", Madonna decided on "Who's That Girl"; as it was for the film's theme song. The song went to #1 on the Billboard chart in August 1987.Plot
Griffin Dunne plays Loudon Trott, an attorney engaged to the daughter of his boss. Madonna plays Nikki Finn, a recently paroled criminal who was framed by the mafia for the murder of her boyfriend. Trott agrees to escort Finn from the prison to the bus terminal as part of a social services program, but she has other plans - namely to prove her innocence, which takes him all across New York City. Various slapstick hijinks ensue along their adventure together. The film also features a
cougar named Murray, a nod to Hawks' work.Reception
