St George's Hospital was opened in the old Lanesborough House on the site of the hotel in 1733. By the 1800s, the hospital was falling into disrepair. The old Lanesborough House was demolished to make way for a new 350 bed new facility for the hospital. Building began in 1827, designed by architect William Wilkins, and the new hospital was completed by 1844. The building was then used as a hospital until the second half of the 20th century. In the 1970s, St George's Hospital moved its operations to a site inTooting , southLondon , finally closing down the Hyde Park Corner site in 1980. Rosewood Hotels and Resorts opened the Hotel in 1991. 10 Years later the management contract was taken over by Starwood, with its St Regis Brand, introducing their first hotel in London and still their only one in England.See also
