- Thoresby Hall
Thoresby Hall is a stately home in the
Dukeries ,Nottinghamshire about convert|3|mi|km fromOllerton .After the original building, built during the reign of
Charles I of England , was destroyed by fire in 1745 it was rebuilt further from the estate's lake by John Carr in 1767-1772 and again byAnthony Salvin in 1865-1875. The hall measures 55 metres on its east and south fronts and 48 metres on its west front. The impressive Great Hall, which contains a gallery originally forminstrels is 19 metres long and 14 metres high.In the 20th century the house was threatened by
subsidence caused bycoal mining . The contents and buildings were sold in 1989 to the Warner Leisure Group and it was reopened in 2000 as a 200 room country house hotel with spa facilities. Due to this the hall has been expanded. At present the estate measures some convert|2000|acre|km2 with a convert|10|mi|km|sing=on circumference.Past residents include the
Duke of Kingston , theEarl Manvers , and also it was the birthplace ofLady Mary Wortley Montagu .External links
