Methodist High School (MHS) was established in
Kanpur ,India in 1876 by the American Missionary Educationist Ms. Isabella Thoburn. Initially established in a large thatched bungalow on the banks of the River Ganges, the school was shifted to its present campus at 73, Cantonment later. It has a large compound with four buildings: elementary school (primary-KG), Primary School (1-5 grades) and Senior School (6-10-11 Grades), The Elvin Starder's Block (Labs and grade 12). The buildings are all brick and the Senior School has a distinctBritish Raj architecture with open verandahs and arches.The school was started to educate "Anglo-Indian" children (children of English men and their household Indian servants, who were often neglected by all sectors of society). Methodist High School has been one of the premier English-medium educational institutions from the late 1800s in Kanpur (then Cawnpore). It used to be called Girls High School until the 1940s even though it did admit some boys.
The school is run by the Methodist Church in India which also runs a number of prestigious schools &colleges in India such as the I T College, Lucknow UP, the
Lucknow Christian College , theCalcutta Boys' School & the Calcutta Girls' High School, Kolkata and theBaldwin Boys High School andBaldwin Girls' High School , Bangalore, to name a few.The school magazine is called Quisqualis, after a flowering creeper that covers the walls of the Senior School. Its motto is "Vincit Omnia Veritas", or Truth Conquers All.
From 1954 to 1983 the school's principal was a woman from
North Carolina , Evelyn M. Strader. She died in 2006. Ms Lee became principal after Ms Strader. She was followed by Mrs Helen Brown. Currently Mrs. Y. Cabral is the Principal.The school library is called the Ethel Whiting Library.
This school has a lot of communities on orkut. It has a standing Students Council called the U.S.O. (United Students Organisation)
