Portorož ("Portorose" in Italian, literally "Port of Roses", also known in English and French under the name "Portorose" pronounced "Portorosse") is a coastal town in
Slovenia and one of the country's largest tourist areas.Geography
Portorož belongs to the coastal municipality of
Piran , located in the South-West of theGulf of Trieste (to the extreme North of theAdriatic Sea ) between the boundaries ofItaly to the North andCroatia to the South; this small town is inhabited by about 3,000 people.Economy
Portorož is home to a marina, casino, and numerous sporting facilities. There is also a small international airport in nearby Sečovlje.
Portorož was host to the
International Physics Olympiad in 1985 and to theEuropean Universities Debating Championships in2001 .It is now the host of the new Euro-Mediterranean University [See the official website of the Euro-Mediterranean University below.] , that was inaugurated on Monday date|9 June 2008, in collaboration with universities of EU and of the Middle-East (from North Africa to Turkey, including Israel), by
