Born in Peterboro,
Madison County, New York , he attended the common schools andCazenovia Seminary . He founded the town of Florence in Oneida County in 1832 and engaged in thelumber business. He waspostmaster of Florence and was a member of theNew York State Assembly in 1838. He moved toNewark, New Jersey in 1840 and engaged in building railroads.Politics
In 1844, Stranahan moved to
Brooklyn , and was electedalderman of that city in 1848. He was elected as anOpposition Party candidate to theThirty-fourth Congress and held office fromMarch 4 ,1855 toMarch 3 ,1857 . He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 to theThirty-fifth Congress and was appointed as a member of the metropolitan police commission onJanuary 1 ,1857 . He was apresidential elector on the Republican tickets in 1860 and 1888, and was the president of the Brooklyn Park Commission from 1860 to 1882, where he was instrumental in securing funding and political support for Brooklyn's Prospect Park. He was a trustee of the New York andBrooklyn Bridge Company, serving as its President in 1885 and presided at itsdedication onMay 24 ,1883 . cite web
