Vijay Seshadri is a
Brooklyn, New York -basedpoet ,essayist , andliterary critic of significant repute.He was born in
India and went to theUnited States in 1959, at the age of five. He grew up inColumbus, Ohio , and has lived in many parts of the country, including the Northwest, where he spent five years working in the fishing industry, and theUpper West Side of Manhattan, NY, where he was a sometime graduate student in Columbia’sPh.D. program in Middle Eastern Languages and Literature.His poems, essays, and reviews have appeared in "AGNI", "Antaeus", "Boulevard", "Epiphany", "
The Nation ", "The New Yorker ", "The Paris Review ", "Shenandoah", "The Southwest Review", "The Threepenny Review", "Verse", and "Western Humanities Review". A collection of his poetry, "Wild Kingdom", was published in the spring of 1996 by Graywolf Press. Seshadri has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and theNational Endowment for the Arts , and has been awarded The Paris Review's Bernard F. Conners Long Poem Prize, the MacDowell Colony's Fellowship for Distinguished Poetic Achievement, as well as a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He holds an A.B. degree fromOberlin College and an M.F.A. fromColumbia University . He is a former member of theNew Yorker editorial staff and he currently teaches poetry and is the director of the graduate non-fiction writing program atSarah Lawrence College .
