Julian Rose

Julian Rose

Sir Julian Rose, 5th Baronet (born 1948) is a leading exponent of organic farming. He commenced the transformation of the Hardwick Estate in South Oxfordshire to the standards of organic farming in 1975.

Following an early career in both broadcasting and the theatre, he decided to make the family estate a mould-breaking example of organic principles in practice. Pioneering a radical experiment in land management, he instituted a system of integrated, yet independent, units based on share farm and rental agreements. The produce from these various enterprises, which incorporate dairy, beef, sheep, poultry, arable, fruit and vegetable enterprises, is marketed through Hardwick’s own outlet, the Old Dairy Farm Shop, which has won national awards.

Sir Julian is an active promoter of organic farming and the rural economy. From 1984 he was on the council of the
Soil Association for over 20 years. He co-founded the Association of Unpasteurised Milk Producers and Consumers, and is actively involved in the campaign to Save Real Milk. He also chairs an alliance of European groups to resist the regulations from Brussels that threaten traditional raw milk products. Nearer to home, he chairs the Association of Rural Businesses in Oxfordshire, an independent committee of rural working people devoted to the regeneration of a diverse and flexible rural economy. He is also the British director of the International Coalition to Protect the Polish Countryside.

He succeeded to the baronetcy of Rose of Hardwick House in 1966 and became a double baronet in 1979 when he also succeeded to the baronetcy of Rose of Montreal.
