Ngara Girls' High School is a provincial school in Kenya, one of the oldest schools established before the country’s independence from the British. The school is located off Ngara Road, in Ngara, Nairobi. Prior to independence, the school was known as The Duchess of Gloucester School, named after Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.[1]
Ngara Girls’ High School began as mixed secondary school, in January 1957 predominantly enrolling students from the Indian community in the Ngara and Parklands neighbourhoods of Nairobi. After five years, in 1962, the school transferred all the boys to Highway Secondary School in Nairobi’s “South B” suburb rendering it an all girls’ school.
In 1964 when Kenya abolished the system of education based on racial lines, the school began admitting students of African heritage. Being an all girls school, the school received its first female head, Mrs. Serah Joseph, a Kenyan of British origin in 1963. The following year Mrs. Reina D’souza an Indian headmistress was posted to the school and replaced Mrs. Joseph. The school’s longest serving and most beloved headmistress, Mrs. Vimala Chaudhry, a Kenyan of Indian heritage, headed the school for 19 years from 1968 to 1987. She was replaced by Mrs. Lorna Otaro a career educationist, and the first African headmistress of the school.
Ngara Girl’s High school became a boarding school in 2001, 43 years after operating as a day school.
