Frederick Neuhouser is the Viola Manderfeld Professor of German and a Professor of
Philosophy atBarnard College ,Columbia University .Before joining Columbia as a faculty member, Neuhouser taught at
Harvard University ,University of California, San Diego andCornell University . Neuhouser graduated fromWabash College (Crawfordsville, IN), "summa cum laude ", and received his Ph.D. fromColumbia University .Neuhouser's focus is on
German Idealism andcontinental social theory . He has published two books: "Fichte's Theory of Subjectivity" (Cambridge University Press, 1990) and "Foundations of Hegel's Social Theory: Actualizing Freedom" (Harvard University Press, 2000). The latter argues for the centrality of "social freedom" in Hegel's political thought.His current work is centered on
Rousseau , especially on notions ofrecognition ,self-love ("amour propre") and rationality.External links
