"Placostylus ambagiosus annectens" is a subspecies of very large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Bulimulidae, the bulimulus snails and their allies.

The survival of this subspecies of large land snail is endangered.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to the Spirits Bay area of Northland in the North Island of New Zealand.

Habitat

This large snail is found at an altitude of about 900 ft between Spirits Bay and Tom Bowling Bay, in mixed forest, and also near the mouth of the Huka Stream.

hell description

The shell is very large, the largest form on the New Zealand mainland. The colour of the exterior is dark chocolate with a very narrow subsutural white line, peristome orange and the interior of the aperture brownish-red. The aperture has five processes represented, all but the parietal tubercle well developed. Examples from the Huka Stream mouth are smaller. The shell height is up to 94 mm, and width up to 40 mm.

Conservation status

"Placostylus ambagiosus annectens" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Endangered".
