"Placostylus ambagiosus whareana" is a subspecies of very large, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Bulimulidae, the bulimulus snails and their allies.

This subspecies is critically endangered.

Distribution

This large land snail is endemic to the North Cape, New Zealand area in Northland in the North Island of New Zealand. It is found at Whareana, between Waikuku Beach and Parengarenga Heads.

Habitat

This snail lives in mixed forest.

hell description

The shell is large and heavy, with all apertural processes, except the parietal tubercle, well developed. The coloration is as in "Placostylus ambagiosus annectens".

This species is evidently the descendant of the subfossil "Placostylus ambagiosus gardneri". The shell height is up to 83 mm, and the width is up to 35 mm.

"Placostylus ambagiosus whareana" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Critical".
