John Murphy (economist)

John J. Murphy is a financial market analyst and is considered the father of modern technical analysis.Fact|date=March 2008. He has authored several bestselling books, including "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets".

"Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets" is regarded as the standard reference of technical analysis and has been translated into eight languages and has become a standard textbook for the subject.Fact|date=March 2008 It is used as the primary text in thirty U.S. universities Fact|date=April 2007 and is the main source of information for the test given by the Market Technicians Association to become licensed as a Chartered Market Technician (CMT).

In 1992, he was given the first award for outstanding contribution to global technical analysis that was ever presented by the International Federation of Technical Analysts.Fact|date=March 2008 In 2002, he was the recipient of the 2002 Market Technicians Association Annual Award. His latest book, "Intermarket Analysis" (Wiley, 2004), is an update of his 1991 edition of the same title which created a new branch of market analysis emphasizing market linkages. Fact|date=April 2007 Murphy emphasizes the use of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to implement asset allocation and sector rotation strategies as well as global trading.

He has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and an MBA from Fordham University.
