Kevin Grimes played his junior hockey with the
Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL from 1996–1999, appearing in 175 games, recording 67 points (8G-59A). In 18 post-season games, Grimes had 16 points (2G-4A). He was drafted by theColorado Avalanche in theNHL Entry Draft in the 1st round, 26th overall, when he left university to pursue his professional ice hockey career.Grimes, a stay-at-home blue-liner, may be best know for his extreme toughness, losing no career fights; however, Grimes was a go-to defence player and despite lacking top speed, was considered a very strong player who fought to defend team members. Grimes was praised early on for his fighting abilities, with his puck-handling (which was notable as a defenceman) and his ability to defend his net often overlooked.
Grimes' overall size became an asset in front of the net, and paired with his stay-at-home skills, led him to be a top-pick for NHL success.
Grimes retired after a career-ending injury, but not before making an impact on the game with his leadership skills, serving as Captain of the Frontenacs, and being chosen to represent Canada at the national games.
