Band history
The Donut Kings formed in 1986 with Nate Crowell (Drums-vocals), Rikk Desgres (Bass-vocals), and Pat Butler (Guitar). In the fall of that year they released First Bite, their first record. The band was based mixing straight ahead pop music, with the silly, comical, novelty music. The first five years saw a revolving door of guitar players. The most notable were Rikk Duquette (Bizmark, 1987), John Omer A.K.A. Johnny Stupid, and Ex Pajama Slaver Dancers Daxe Rexford, whom both contributed to 1989's School Food. In 1991 Ex-McKnickNix bassist Bob Haberern joined the Donut Kings on guitar. This lineup released 3 albums, No Evacuation Possible (1996), FAPLUNK (1999), and NOTHINGHEAD (2005).[1] This lineup first received national airplay via the Dr. Demento Show.[2] On Christmas Eve. 1999 the good Doctor played "I wanna Be Santaded" a Christmas spoof of the Ramones hit I Wanna Be Sedated. In 2000 The won the Valley Advocate Grand Band Slam in the Alternative/ Eclectic category.[3]
In 2005 the Donut Kings added a second guitarist Marty Irizarry. This lineup release their seventh album, appropriately titled Seven. Here they updated their sound. Nearly gone is the novelty aspect of the band, save the name itself. The only remnants musically on the record of a novelty song is "Fast Food." Possibly a reference to their 1989 record "School Food." The new record is basic hard rock 70's style. The dueling guitars of Haberern and Irizarry sound like a modern day Lynyrd Skynyrd. Adding to the 70's sound is guest keyboardist Dan Ryan on the Hammond Organ.
In 2009 Donut Kings release the single Pub With No Beer. Donut Kings have a history of playing and recording "beer songs." Their most popular beer song is the re-make of a re-make of sort's, the classic "In Heaven There is No Beer" (from 1999's FAPLUNK.) Another popular tune Finnegan's Drink (from 1996's No Evacuation Possible) was a song about a drinking glass kept behind a glass case by one of its famous long dead patrons, Mr. Finnegan. In the song the new patron admires the drinking glass. But in the end he gets his due with his glass being placed next to Finnegans. The name Finnegan was a nod to the classic pub-drinking song Finnegan's Wake.
On the new single they release their own version of Finnegans's Wake Along with Gordon Parson's Pub With No Beer. This song was voted #5 on the Best Australian Songs of all time by the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA).[4]
