History

The Lyell McEwin Hospital was opened on 22 April, 1959 and was named after Sir Lyell McEwin, the presiding Secretary and Minister of Health.

In 1983 the Lyell McEwin Hospital merged with the Central Northern Health Service to form the Lyell McEwin Health Service. A AU$50 million redevelopment program followed, with the addition of new wards, operating theatres, an Emergency Department, Delivery Suite and Outpatient Department.

In 1995, the North Western Adelaide Health Service (NWAHS) was formed by amalgamating the Lyell McEwin Health Service and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

On 1 July 2004, the hospital was incorporated into the [http://www.health.sa.gov.au/cnahs/ Central Northern Adelaide Health Service] .

The Lyell McEwin provides general medical, surgical, paediatric and obstetric / gynaecological services in addition to acute coronary care. There are limited orthopaedic services in hours.
