The annual club transmediale festival is a music and visual arts event held in
Berlin ,Germany . Begun in 1999, the festival originally focused onelectronic music , but has since evolved to cover a wide range of genres under the banner "festival for adventurous music and related visual arts".History
The first club transmediale festival was billed as a fusion of
electronic music , video, motion graphics and visual art, connecting club culture, contemporary art and academic context. It showcased theBerlin scene in the newly founded [http://www.clubmaria.de/index2.html Maria am Ostbahnhof] club, profiling labels such as the legendary Chain Reaction and Payola as well as the Dutch label [http://www.staalplaat.com/ Staalplaat] . It was founded by Jan Rohlf, Marc Weiser and Lillevän Pobjoy (Rechenzentrum), Remco Schuurbiers and Timm Ringewaldt as a parallel event to theTransmediale Festival.Between 2000 and 2005, club transmediale quickly grew into an independent entity held over periods of up to 13 days 2003 with many satellite events around the city of Berlin, including performances and large scale installations. The festival has workshop and panel discussion elements and has become a central spoke of the European and International scene for professionals and enthusiasts alike, with partners including
Mutek ,TodaysArt , Dis-Patch, and Garage Festival Stralsund.Club transmediale has changed venue several times. In 1999 it opened in the Berlin Club [http://www.clubmaria.de/index2.html Maria am Ostbahnhof] . In 2000, it was held in an empty floor of the Haus des Lehrers building on Alexanderplatz, in 2002 it was in E-Werk, one of the major Techno Clubs of Berlin in the early 90s. Since 2003, the festival has been back at [http://www.clubmaria.de/index2.html Maria am Ostbahnhof] , with satellite events at various venues such as the Volksbühne on Rosa Luxemburg Platz, the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in Kreuzberg and others.
The festival is now produced and curated by DISK - Sound and Image Initiative, founded in 2005, an independent collective of artists and curators including Jan Rohlf, Remco Schuurbiers, and Oliver Baurhenn. The festival has received project funding from
Hauptstadtkulturfonds and theKulturstiftung des Bundes .External links
