- Camp Horizons
Camp Horizons is a
summer camp close to Harrisonburg,Virginia ,USA . It caters for children aged 5-17, with those aged 17 taking part in the Counselor in Training (CIT) program.The camp is non religious and apart from the flag flying outside the younger children's dining hall also has no nationalistic undercurrent. The basis is on fun and friendship and there are no ulterior motives, something which attracts many of the campers parents and counselors.
The counselors are around half from the United States and half international. Counselors come mostly from European Countries (especially the
United Kingdom ) andAustralia andNew Zealand . Typically the international staff arrive through the Camp America orCamp USA programs.Villages
There are five different villages to the camp.
The younger children's villages, for ages 5-12 are Rainbow for the Girls and Sunrise for the Boys. The younger children's villages come under the collective Journey program.
The older children's villages, for ages 13-16 are Starlight for the Girls and Sunset for the Boys. The older children's villages come under the collective Explorer program.
The fifth is the adventure program, which is for both boys and girls, and where they spend their time in the forest, away from the main camp. They do a lot of hill walking and outdoors courses.
Activities
The camp has many activities in sports, water sports, equestrian and adventure.
*Sports include: Soccer, Baseball, Tennis, Archery, Swimming, Basketball, Lacrosse, Softball, Frisbee, Volleyball
*Water sports include: Scuba Diving, Canoeing, Kayaking, White Water Rafting (for adventure campers)
*Non-sport activities include: Arts and Crafts, Photography, Horizons Radio, Music lessons, Theatre, and Dance.Evening Activities
After dinner, there are evening activities which are conducted as a program. There is always a campfire with a meaningful discussion and then everyone says something that happened to them that day that made them feel good.
Evening activities after campfire include dodgeball, talent shows and treasure hunts.
