Early years
Oñate grew up in the small town of La Paz 15 minutes away from Valledupar where he studied until graduating from high school, he was known for having a great aptitud for singing vallenatos. He was also a

1960s
In 1968 after High School, Oñate gets hired by a local vallenato group called "Los Guatapuri" as the lead singer and officially starting his career as vallenato singer. The group released an album titled Festival Vallenato recording the songs; "Campesina Vallenata", "El hijo de mi ahijada", "Sombra Vengadora", "Marina", "El diablo de San Diego", "Lavandera", "La negrita de ají", "Advertencia", "Luisa Fernanda", "Canto optimista", "María Eugenia" and "Fabiola".
In 1969, Oñate teams up with the already locally famous Hermanos Lopez vallenato group once again as lead singer releasing the album
Lo Último en Vallenatos! with the songs; "Berta Caldera", "Recuerdos", "Diciembre Alegre", "Vámonos Compañera", "Secreto Raro", "Gallo Viejo", "Mis Viejos", "Siniestro de Ovejas", "La Paz", "Me Quisiste y Me Olvidaste", "Ligia" and "Mi Morenita".1970s
In 1970 Oñate releases his second album with the Hermanos Lopez titled
Diosa Divina with the songs; "Diosa divina","Dina López", "Triste Recuerdo", "Porque Eres Así", "Sueño Vallenato", "Gratitud", "Serenata Vallenata", "Amor de Callejera", "Recordándote", "Amor a Dos Manos", "Los Tiempos Cambian" and "Barranquillera". this year he also recorded an album separately with accordion player Nelson Diaz, titledConmigo es el Baile with the songs; "Ojitos Claros", "Panderitos Parrandero", "San Jacinto", "La Vieja", "Amor San Juanero", "Diciembre Alegre", "Ya Viene la Cumbia", "Don Ramón", "El Toro Prieto", "La Sabrosa", "Vámonos Compañera" and "La Mica Rosa".In 1971 Oñate and the Hermanos Lopez recorded the album
