After visiting Tennessee's first mental health facility in November 1847,
Dorothea Dix urged the state legislature to replace the unfit facility. The new facility, named Central State Hospital for the Insane, opened in 1852 in southeastNashville, Tennessee on the southwest corner of present-day Murfreesboro Road and Donelson Pike nearNashville International Airport . Formerly the location for Vanderbilt University's Tennessee Neurological Institute which opened in 1963.The hospital buildings were demolished in order for
