The Daily Evergreen

[http://www.dailyevergreen.com"The Daily Evergreen"] is a student-edited newspaper and Web site at Washington State University.

The 12,000-circulation newspaper is distributed weekdays throughout the academic year, and bi-weekly in the summer. Students of all majors and interests are hired to write stories, take photographs, make graphics, sell advertising, and edit. Leadership positions abound with dozens of student manager positions, assisted by professional advisers who have decades of newspaper experience behind them. "The Daily Evergreen" is read by more than 83 percent of students, more than half the faculty, and also is distributed throughout Pullman and Moscow, Idaho. The paper is printed at the press of The Lewiston Tribune.

History

The [http://www.wsu.edu Washington State University] newspaper was first published in 1895. In 2007, a major redesign included changed folios and flag. In 2008, the pages were slimmed and space between content limited.

Daily operation

Sections within the Evergreen include News, Sports, Opinion, Life, and MiX, a Thursday entertainment insert.

Position duties vary with each section, and the editor positions roll over each semester. Editors-in-Chief are elected by the Student Publications Board. The editor-elect then selects the remaining staff positions from a pool of applicants.

The News editor is in charge of tracking news around the community and campus and assigning daily stories to writers. The editor sits with the writer and edits the story for grammar, clarity and Associated Press Style (although house style is used in some cases) before sending it for further edits and eventual placement. The news editor also makes judgments about when and where stories should run in each edition. These decisions are discussed by the entire staff at news budget meetings before production begins each night.

The copy desk, made up of 2-3 copy editors, lays out pages for the news section, pages containing wire service content and pages that don't fit with any of the other major sections. Evergreen copy editors are a hybrid of copy editors (in the traditional sense) and page designers. Each editor is assigned a number of pages at the daily budget meeting. Besides designing pages, they must edit stories on the page, and write headlines and summary graphs for each story. Copy editors must be proficient in page design programs and be familiar with the newspaper's design philosophy.

The Opinion editor recruits, edits and organizes the opinion columnists for the paper. Weekly student columnists submit columns through JetSet, the Evergreen's content-management system. The columns are then picked up and editing by the Opinion editor. Twice weekly, the Opinion editor meets with the rest of the Editorial Board to discuss topics for the staff editorials. In most cases, the Opinion editor is in charge of writing and editing the staff editorial, with approval from the rest of the Board. Each night, the Opinion editor also lays out the Opinion page, writing headlines and formatting the structure of the columns, letters to the editor and staff editorials.

The Life section editor is responsible for coordinating and recruiting writers and columnists to contribute to the section each day, editing stories, planning photos and graphics (art) and laying out the Life page each night. The Life editor, as with other section editors, uploads their stories to The Daily Evergreen’s Web site each night.

The Sports section editor is also responsible for coordinating and recruiting writers and columnists, arranging for art, editing stories, and layout each night. The Sports section covers all Cougar varsity sports and some WSU club sports. Sports press conferences and game tapes are posted on The Daily Evergreen multimedia Web site.

The Multimedia editor recruits and assigns photographers and videographers to provide the Evergreen with art and online content each day. The editor works up photos for each section and also for news wire pages. Video features, slide shows and podcasts are uploaded onto the [http://www.dailyevergreen.com/multimedia The Daily Evergreen multimedia] Web site.
