The Other Place (theatre)
- The Other Place (theatre)
The Other Place is a black box theatre on Southern Lane, near to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. It is owned and operated by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Initially constructed as a storage space and additional rehearsal room the original "Tin Hut" was converted to be used as a theatre in 1974 [Studio Shakespeare: The Royal Shakespeare Company at the Other Place by Alycia Smith-Howard, 2006. [ [http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/stratfordians/stgoobu.htm Buzz Goodbody (1946-1975) A Dictionary of the RSC by Simon Trowbridge] ] This prefabricated corrugated iron storage shed created an intimate studio theatre space very different from the famous proscenium arch of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. In such close confines it was not unknown for actors to interact with the audience by sitting amongst them, or rushing onto the stage through the theatre's main entrance.
The prefabricated shed of The Other Place was demolished and replaced by a brick built "theatre in the round" stage space in 1990. Though technically far more advanced than the original structure, the new theatre lacked the intimacy of the "Tin Hut" and audiences no longer entered with bottles of wine and hampers to share with the cast during the interval.
The new building has closed as a theatre space, and has been transformed into a foyer for the temporary "Courtyard Theatre". The "Courtyard Theatre"'s thrust stage is a proof of concept for the "Main House" of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre which is currently under redevelopment.
