Lake Winder is a convert|1496|acre|km2|0|sing=on lake in Brevard County and a small portion lies in Osceola County. The lake was named after U. S. Army Captain Edward Winder. Early in 1838 Winder was assigned to scout the area for Seminoles. He discovered Lake Poinsett, named to honor the Secretary of War. The smaller lake to the south was named after Winder. Brevard County, Florida: A Short History to 1955 ] Lake Winder is the only lake in the St. Johns River basin that doesn't support a marina. The nearest unincorporated settlement is Viera, Florida, convert|7.3|mi|km|1 to the east. It's the third largest lake in Brevard County. It is part of the St. Johns River system and governed by the St. Johns River Water Management District. The lake is accessible by boat from Lake Poinsett, convert|5|mi|km|0 downstream. Two canals make the way to Lake Winder, but do not cross the county line. About convert|2|mi|km|0 to the west is the nearby CR 419. Of all the 3 largest lakes in Brevard County, it is the only lake in the county that does not associate with viewing a sunset.

Geography

Lake Winder is located at coord|28|14|35|N|80|51|41|W|type:waterbody_region:US-FL. It is located approximately between US 192 and the Beachline.
