Rachel Bromwich (born 1915) is a British scholar. Her focus is on
medieval Welsh literature , which she taught at theUniversity of Wales Institute, Cardiff . She was Emeritus Reader in Celtic Languages and Literature at theUniversity of Cambridge . Among her most important contributions to the study of Welsh literature was the "Trioedd Ynys Prydein", the modern edition of theWelsh Triads . Originally published in 1963, a new edition was printed in 2005.Bromich was born Rachel Amos in
Hove ,England , in 1915. Her father, Maurice Amos, was an English legal expert who served as international law adviser to theEgypt ian government; her mother was Scottish and strongly associated with theQuakers . The family moved frequently before settling inCumbria in 1925. In 1934 Rachel Amos attendedNewnham College, Cambridge , where she studied theAnglo-Saxon language before shifting departments to focus onMiddle Welsh . In 1938 she moved to theUniversity College of Wales, Bangor and studied underIfor Williams . Amos took a great interest in Medieval Welsh literature, and particularly, theArthurian legend ; it was Williams' suggestion that she edit the Welsh Triads. In 1939 she married John Bromwich; they had one son, Brian.References
