List of Registered Historic Places in Chicago

This is a List of Registered Historic Places in Chicago, Illinois. There are at least 299 places listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in Chicago, Illinois.The total is documented by the table below, with verification in the National Register Information System (NRIS) for each one. Searching in the National Register Information System at [http://www.nr.nps.gov/nrloc1.htm http://www.nr.nps.gov/nrloc1.htm] upon "IL" and "Chicago" yields a total of 306 for the city, because it includes eleven items that are merely boundary increases to existing historic districts (1 for Columbus Park, 2 for Hyde Park-Kenwood HD, 2 for Lakeview HD, 3 for Sheffield HD, 1 for Tri-Taylor HD, 1 for Villa HD, 1 for West Jackson HD) and it does not yet reflect the recently listed International Tailoring Company Building and Epworth Methodist Episcopal Church. The Chicago NRHPs are also listed within [http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/il/Cook/state.html Cook County, Illinois listings of NRHP.COM] , a private site that repackages NRIS data.] Of these Registered Historic Places (RHPs), 67 are in fact historic districts which include numerous buildings, structures, objects and sites. Included also is a short list of formerly listed Registered Historic Places of the city.

The first sites in Chicago to be listed were four listed on October 15 1966 when the National Register was created by the National Park Service: the historic settlement house Hull House, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Frederick C. Robie House, the Lorado Taft Midway Studios, and the Site of First Self-Sustaining Nuclear Reaction. The NPS first incorporated previously named National Historic Landmarks, including these four. In total, thirty-one of these sites are further designated National Historic Landmarks of the United States, indicated by the two darker colors in the table below.

The most recently listed RHP is the Vassar Swiss Underwear Company Building, designated September 17 2008, [ [http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/nrlist.htm Recent Listings] ] which is one of many business-related sites on the list. There are numerous early skyscraper buildings designed by Louis Sullivan, and at least three sites relate to the city's role in nation-wide retailing. [Three retailing sites are: Montgomery Ward Company Complex, Sears, Roebuck and Company Complex, Marshall Field Company Store] Included also are numerous religious buildings, 13 hotels, [Hotels: 13 sites have "hotel" in their name.] and six theaters. [Six NRHPs that are theaters are: Orchestra Hall, Biograph Theater Building, [Balaban and Katz Chicago Theatre, Balaban and Katz Uptown Theatre, New Masonic Building and Oriental Theater, and Central Park Theater] Fully 55 are located in the downtown Loop area, including the Loop Retail Historic District itself.

Two National Historic Landmark ships were located in the city, but have been relocated out of state.

To be listed on the National Register, sites must retain their historic integrity, they usually must be 50 years old, and their listing must be promoted – or at least not opposed – by the current owner, so many historically important sites in the city are not listed. Approximately 107 are also among the 292 city of Chicago-designated landmarks, which includes numerous more structures that do not meet National Register criteria of historic integrity or for other reasons have not been listed. Current Chicago NRHPs

The RHPs are distributed across 45 of the 77 well-defined community areas of Chicago, from Rogers Park at the north on the lakefront to East Side on the southeast lakefront, and from Edison Park in the northwest to Morgan Park in the southwest.

There are at least three formerly listed Registered Historic Places in Chicago. These include two ships, that were moved to Michigan, and Grant Park Stadium, which was delisted.
