Rival Turf!

Rival Turf!

"Rival Turf" is a Super Nintendo game that was released by Jaleco in 1992. Rival Turf’s story focuses on the drug wars of the early 1990s and deals with themes of kidnapping, inner-city and organized crime, the international trafficking of controlled substances, and other issues inherent with globalization. Rival Turf became an instant success for its innovative game play and detailed storyline.

Gameplay

Rival Turf utilizes mode-7 graphics rotation to allow for life-like graphics to be rendered in a near three-dimensional environment. The game is of the side-scrolling adventure genre, and consists mostly of controlling a character in a one or two player mode, to defeat a plethora of enemies using fists, feet, and various weapons collected throughout the course of the game. The game also includes an "angry" mode where the character becomes so enraged at the level of excess and debauchery exhibited by the featured criminals, he becomes temporarily invincible. An innovative versus mode, where two players can square off against one another in a fight to the death, is also offered in the game. Rival Turf was the first game of its kind to experiment with such groundbreaking features.

The story begins with vigilante and concerned Los Angeles citizen, Jack Flak, contacting his friend, police officer Oswald "Oozie" Nelson, to report the kidnapping of his girlfriend, Heather. Officer Nelson has been investigating the recent drug traffiking activities of local crime kingpin, Big Al, and his gang, known as the Street Kings. Both Jack and Officer Nelson are convinced of Big Al's involvement in Heather's kidnapping. Risking both legal ramifications and physical harm, Jack and Officer Nelson set out on their own to track down Big Al, not only to find Heather, but to put an end to the illicit drug flow that is slowly bringing L.A. to its knees.

Using their own brand of justice, Jack and Officer Nelson must fight their way through the ranks of the Street Kings, going on a journey that takes them from the streets of L.A. to the jungles of South America. It is there that they are able to shut down a major drug manufacturing operation, arrest or kill the major leaders of the Street Kings organization, including Big Al himself, and rescue Heather.
