Robert Jerzy Szmidt, born July 26, 1962 in Wrocław, Poland, since 1986 living in Katowice, Poland, is a Polish science fiction and fantasy writer, translator and journalist. Founder of the Science Fiction magazine and Nautilus Award, he is the author of 3 novels and 12 short stories as well as an increasing number of translations. Currently publisher and editor in chief of the Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror monthly magazine.Having received a proper training, he may call himself a sailor, however he has never worked as one. In the late 80s and early 90s he was involved in video and bookselling business as the Amber Publishing House sales representative and the owner of one of the first video rentals in the country; he also founded Video Business and Video Premiery magazines. Afterwards he moved into interactive games business – as a publisher (PlayStation Plus and Player Station Plus magazines) and a translator.Robert Szmidt joined the Polish s.f. fandom in the early 80s and soon founded Sfinks Award, which later transformed into Zajdel Award and took its own course. In 1985 he was awarded the Śląkwa Prize as The Fan Of The Year. At the turn of the century, being faithful to the passion of his youth, he founded the Science Fiction magazine (2000) and Nautilus Award (2004).
