Stephen Laybutt (born 3 September, 1977 in Lithgow, New South Wales) is an Australian football (soccer) player currently playing for the Newcastle United Jets as a defender. [cite news |first=Renee |last=Valentine |title=Dutchy urges understudies to seize the moment |publisher=The Herald |page=68 |date=2007-09-07]

He signed for the Jets after completing a long spell with K.A.A. Gent in Belgium.

Newcastle manager Gary van Egmond was quoted as saying "He's a natural defender, he's a leftie, which works well for us. He's got age and experience, he's comfortable on the ball, and he's one who's not going to be intimidated... He's exactly what we need." [cite news |first=Michael |last=Cockerill |title=Mariners buoyed as Heffernan off hook for shoulder charge |publisher=The Sydney Morning Herald |date=2007-08-30 |accessdate=2007-09-08 |url=http://www.smh.com.au/news/football/mariners-buoyed-as-heffernan-off-hook-for-shoulder-charge/2007/08/29/1188067189348.html?page=2] He unfortunatley suffered a year-ending hamstring injury and as a result, has widely been tipped that he will not feature again for Newcastle.
