The Omori family are poor. Mio Omori's father died when she was young, and her mother has been hospitalised for some time with an unspecified illness. She lives alone with her little brother Hina(ta), doing a number of part-time jobs just to get by. One night, when going home after work, she encounters upon a violent young man who tells her he'll 'buy her', after stealing her first kiss.

The next day her mother tells Mio that their landlord has offered her a job as a maid. Mio hesitates, but her mother insists she takes the job, as she feels this is safer than some of the late-night work Mio has been doing. To her horror, Mio finds out that the violent guy who stole her kiss is none other than Shoei Jinnai (who attempts to molest her), the son of their landlord and the most popular and high-achieving student at her high school; so much so that he is widely known as 'Prince Jinnai'

Mio starts to work for the Jinnais and the Prince's behaviour towards her grows worse. He also starts to blame her for 'forgetting something'. Mio finds a ring in the forest between her house and the Jinnai's. This seems to trigger some memories of the past, and during a fever-induced dream while ill she remembers what happened in the past between herself and the Prince.

It transpires that as children they were very close, partly as a result of the friendship of their fathers and partly because Mio's mother agreed to act as Shoei's 'wet nurse' or mother figure. One day, while playing together in the forest they switched their clothes, and agreed to switch identities as part of a game. When a stranger appeared asking for 'Shoei Jinnai', Mio answered and was kidnapped. She was returned after a day, but Shoei was so disturbed by this event that he shouts at Mio, tells her that he hates her, saying she should never have come back, and ignores her afterwards. (Later, Mio surmises Shoei resented her return because he wanted her mother to be his, forever.) Mio's trauma is profound and triggers her memory loss.

After learning the truth about their past, Mio, at the direction of her mother, makes an effort to re-educate the Prince. Spending this much time with him, her feelings for him grow powerful, though somewhat confused. He molests her (with varying degrees of resistance) from time to time, although it's not altogether obvious how vehement her pleas of "No" and "Don't" are as time goes on.

In his own strange way, the Prince starts to treat her as his girlfriend. He even tells Mio he loves her. When they finally start dating, Mio's brother Hinata becomes extremely jealous. He tries to interfere with their relationship, and even goes as far as trying a rather ham-fisted attempt to seduce the Prince. When Mio catches them kissing, she runs home, but not for long, as the next morning their house is destroyed by fire on the Prince's order.

Forcing Mio and Hinata to live with the Jinnais. Mio announces she would rather run away than live with the Jinnais. Hinata confuses things yet further when he kisses Mio and confesses his (more than brotherly) love for her. The Prince steps in, but Mio doesn't want to be with either of them and flees. The Prince finds her in the process of being solicited by a rather creepy middle-aged man and drags her back; during the argument that follows Mio finally tells him she doesn't like the way he treats her and this actually brings them closer together.

Meanwhile, Hinata has also run away, going to live with his pimp; he has actually been working as an escort for some time, without Mio knowing. With the help of the Jinnai 'oniwaban' (actually the gardener) Hayato, Mio finally manages to talk to Hinata on the phone. During this conversation Hinata reveals to Mio that the Jinnais have been helping the Omori family financially for some considerable time, and suggests a family connection is the principal reason for this. Mio confronts her mother, who confesses she has been raising Mr Jinnai's illegitimate child as her own. Mio surmises that this means the Prince is her brother and tells him so. Both Mio and Shoei are distraught and end up consummating their relationship. It then turns out that that it is "Hinata" who is the Prince's brother.

When all of this is revealed, Mr Jinnai insists upon Mio and Hinata moving into his home, with Hinata finally being accepted as his second son. Hinata's reasons doing this become clear on the evening his is revealed to the rest of the Jinnai family, especially as this is the same night that Shoei reveals that he wants to marry Mio. Mr. Jinnai takes the news in a seemingly joking manner and decides that Mio should help Hina settle into the household. Shoei promptly refuses and his father indicates that they should have a discussion about this later.

Because both brothers have declared they want Mio, she suffers from torment at the hand of the other servants, although sometimes Hina comes to her rescue. At the beginning of the summer vacation, Shoei kidnaps Mio and takes her to their "love nest". To their surprise, Hinata gets a second floor built onto their apartment and moves in. In order to escape Hinata, the Mio and the Prince try and hide from the Jinnai's and Hinata, but come to find out that there has been put out a reward to return the two, assumingly by Hinata. To find refuge after being chased by gangsters and denied hotel rooms, the two break into the school and being to take a break. It is revealed by the Prince that there is one more person besides Hinata trying to separate them, but Mio is unsure of who it is.

After leaving the school, the Prince takes Mio back to his mansion to confront his family and Hinata where he is met by Hayato who reveals that Mr. Jinnai will "eliminate" the Omori family. The Prince and Mio go to the hospital, where it is confirmed that, despite her mothers poor condition, she is being discharged from the hospital.Shoei realizes that his father is serious. On there way out of the hospital, with a sick Akiko with them, they encounter Tomoe who says that he will help them. True to his word Tomoe takes Mio and the prince to Hisako's place, Hinata's mother, to hide for a while. They thank Hisako and she explains that the Jinnai family ruined her life and took everything away from her as well.Tomoe graciously offers to buy supplies for Mio and the prince since they both had no cloths or any personal items with them. He requests for Mio to go with him because he doesn't know her size and she knows the prince's underwear size. She agrees to go and before leaving she borrows the prince's glasses, promising to come back safely. Meanwhile at the Jinnai's mansion Hinata is lounging when Hayato comes into his room suddenly. He proposes that if Hinata wanted revenge on the prince then be his pawn. He later explains that Hinata was only brought into the Jinnai family as insurance as the prince's back-up;if the back up is bad in quality then it is disposed of.While Mio and Tomoe are shopping he warns her that she will have a lot of obstacles to overcome in the future. On their way out to the car they are suddenly apprehended by the police. Tomoe is arrested because he is suspected of running a prostitution ring (which is true). They take Mio too and in the middle of the struggle the prince's glasses fall and break.Mio is placed in a restricted roomand is completely bewildered as to what is happening. Soon Mr. Jinnai enters the room and requests her to take him to where Shouei (the prince) is.

Characters

;Mio Omori: Seventeen years old, her birthday is on December 1, her starsign is Sagittarius and bloodtype O. Mio is a poor, very hardworking girl, Mio lives with her brother, Hinata, while their mother is in hospital. Due to an incident in her childhood, in which she was kidnapped in place of Shoei, she lost her memory of her friendship with him. In a meeting many years later, Shoei offers to buy her, claiming she now "belongs to him". She is in love with Shoei.

;Shoei ("Prince") Jinnai: His birthday is on May 22, his starsign is Gemini and bloodtype AB. Shoei is Mio's closest childhood friend and the scion of a very wealthy family, although Mio initially doesn't recall their past together. His father is the Omori family's landlord. He is popular, athletic, intelligent and handsome, adored by many girls in school, despite his cruel, cold demeanor. He is deeply in love with Mio. He manipulates events so that Mio is first forced to work in his home as a maid, then to live there. Spoiled and extremely wealthy, he lacks in compassion, consideration and empathy towards others. Mio later takes it upon herself to re-educate him to be a better person. Later they become a couple.

;Hinata (Hina) Omori: Mio's little brother, though not it transpires by blood. He is in fact the illegitimate son of Mr. Jinnai and is the Prince's half-brother. Originally, At some point Hinata seems to have believed Mio was Mr. Jinnai's child. It's not clear how he found out or how long he's known about his origins, but it is a fact that he's been in love with his "sister" for a while. On many occasions, Hinata has demonstrated a chilling cruel streak and a manipulative personality; he wants Mio and is apparently willing to use tricks and lies to separate her from the Prince. He has even gone so far as too trick a half-blind Shoei into thinking he was Mio so he could seduce him. Unknown to Mio, he has been working as a male escort (prostitute). After running away from home, Hinata moved in with his pimp, before moving into the Jinnai house.

;Mr. Tomoe: Hina's pimp. Hina moves in with him after running away. Later, Mio moves in with him too after he offers her a job and tells her that Hina is staying with him. Mio does not know Mr. Tomoe is Hina's pimp. He also seems to know a lot about Hina and Mio's family issues with the Jinnais, showing Hinata where to find his birth mother.

;Hayato: Prince's oniwaban (spy) is nineteen years old. Since his real job serves little purpose most of the time, he acts as the gardener for Jinnai house. He is very friendly and listens to Mio's problems, though he usually seems to know more than he lets on.

;Akiko: Mio and Hinata's mother. She is very sickly and stays in the hospital. Shoei also has a close relationship with her, because she was his wet nurse (mother figure) when he was a child. There is some evidence of their closeness when she calls him by his given name and that he frequently visits her at the hospital of his own accord.

;Mr. Jinnai: Shoei's father and Hinata's biological father. Mr. Jinnai is usually very carefree and extremely gentle, so much so that Mio says she can't refuse his most unusual requests. He also has been shown to become very serious and even frightening at times of stress. Afterwards, of course, he immediately reverts to his usual character. At some point in the past, he and Mio's father were very close friends, and Mr. Jinnai wishes to keep caring for Mio and her family because of it.

;Jun-chan: A friend of Mio's from school.
