Bollywood film directed byAnil Matto released in1997 .Synopsis
The story revolves around the plainclothesman police officer Yeshwant Lohar [played by Nana Patekar] who is married to an illiterate woman named Ragini [played by Madhoo] . he wants to educate her so that she may join the
Indian Administrative Service .One day, he goes undercover as a beggar to catch a drug dealer named Salim. He is arrested, tried and sentenced to prison. Lohar is ostensibly praised by his superior, Chopra. However, Chopra is secretly irked at Lohar as Chopra is, in actuality, a corrupt police officer in the payroll of the drug dealer. Chopra frames Lohar for murder and gets him sent to prison as well. Meanwhile, Ragini joins the I.A.S and gets a job at the police station where her husband was formerly appointed. She suspects that Chopra had a hand in framing her beloved husband. She lets Chopra know that she is watching him closely. Chopra starts to panick and tries every trick to silence Ragini, including bribery and intimidation. Ragini rejects his offers and escapes from the clutches of the thugs hired by Chopra to intimidate her. Chopra then hatches a plan to defame Ragini. He assigns a policeman named Atul [played by Atul Agnihotri] , an old friend of Ragini, to guard her. He then falsifies pictures of the two of them in a compromising position and uses it to fabricate a love affair between the two.He shows the pictures to Lohar and releases them to the press. Thus, her character is severely maligned in the public eye and Yeshwant avoids her during conjugal visits.
Upon his release from prison, Yeshwant confronts his wife. Ragini pleads with him to believe that the allegation of an extramarital affair is a lie.Lohar, now extremely angry, goes on a killing spree. He kills Chopra's associates and then kills Chopra himself during the commission of an illegal drug deal. With the evidence of Chopra's corruption and crimes plain for all to see, he is vindicated.
Reviews
Some viewers felt that the film was virtually a "one-man show", with Patekar's character stealing the show.Film critics also praised the role of Madhoo as "strong" and "flawless". The film was well-reviewed as a rare and thought-provoking piece, sorely needed in an era of superficial commercialized movies.
Trivia
The controversial line from the film "Ek machhar aadmi ko hijhda bana deta hain" (Translation: "a single mosquito can emasculate a man") became a popular catchphrase and was widely used to promote the film. The dialogue was recited by the star Nana Patekar.
