Big Dig (Liverpool)

The Big Dig is collection of various civil engineering projects in Liverpool to regenerate the city.

The scheme is a ten-year plan in preparation for the city's 2008 European Capital of Culture status. It will cost around £3bn and create 14,000 jobs, and includes a rationalisation of the city centre traffic network. Criticism

Implementation of the scheme has been protracted and has severely hampered the ability of the city to perform as a commercial centre. The cancellation of the 2007 Mathew Street Festival has been directly attributed to the 'big dig'.Fact|date=August 2007
