USNS "Titan" (T-AGOS-15) was a Stalwart class Modified Tactical Auxiliary General
Ocean Surveillance Ship of theUnited States Navy .History
Stalwart class ships were originally designed to collect underwater
acoustical data in support ofCold war anti-submarine warfare operations in the 1980s. "Titan" was laid downOctober 30 1986 at Halter Marine Inc. inGulfport, Mississippi , launchedJune 18 1988 and deliveredMarch 8 1989 to theMilitary Sealift Command for use as an Ocean Surveillance Ship. "Titan" was stricken from the Naval RegisterAugust 31 1993 and transferred to theNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .Ka'Imimoana
Ex-"Titan" was converted at Maritime Contractors, Inc Shipyard,
Bellingham, Washington beginning May 1995. Commissioned byNOAA onApril 25 ,1996 R/V "Ka'Imimoana" (R-333), [http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3738/is_200401/ai_n9368333] Hawaiian for "The Ocean Seeker."
