December 1 ,1939 ) is aBelarus ianmathematician .Academic career
Platonov received his doctorate from the
Belarus State University in1967 . Since1972 he has been an Academician of theNational Academy of Sciences of Belarus and its President (1987-1993). He was the Director of the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus from 1977 to 1992. His interests arealgebra ,algebraic geometry , andnumber theory . He solvedthe Strong approximation problem, developed the reduced K-theory and solved the Tannaka-Artin problem. He solved also the Kneser-Tits and Grothendieck problems. Lenin Prize (1978), Humboldt Prize (1993).A celebrated figure in his native Belarus, he is also a member of the
Canadian Mathematical Society and was from1993 to2001 a Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics of theUniversity of Waterloo inWaterloo, Ontario ,Canada .He is the author, with
Andrei Rapinchuk , of "Algebraic Groups and Number Theory" (Academic Press, 1993, ISBN 978-0125581806).Arrest and trial
On
November 9 ,1999 , he was arrested by Waterloo police and charged withattempted murder for an attack on his wife Valentina Platonova in their home. They were later divorced. OnJanuary 17 , 2001, he pled guilty to the lesser charge ofaggravated assault and was given by judge Robert Reilly a conditional sentence ofhouse arrest , forcing him to remain in his house between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., untilJanuary 16 ,2003 . He later obtained permission to extend his curfew, to facilitate travel toToronto for business purposes. OnAugust 31 , 2001, he took early retirement from the University of Waterloo.
