Charles Evans Hughes Middle School is a public middle school, part of the Long Beach Unified School District in Long Beach, California.

Hughes is located in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood and serves portions of the cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill. As of 2008, the principal is Monica Daley.

The official mascot is an owl. Hughes is recognized for its diverse background of students. The school was the winner of the California Distinguished School Award in 1999 and 2005 [cite web

] , and the United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon in 2000.

Hughes offers three different programs in which students may excel. This helps students learn in an environment that is most suited to their learning needs. The advanced program is GATE (gifted and talented education). The school's GATE program is called TAP (Talent Achievement Program). The second level is Honors, for the students who exceed the regular curriculum, which is the third level. The regular level of classes is challenging in itself, but does not offer the extra growth opportunities that some students require.

chool uniform

Hughes' school uniform consists of dark blue, light blue, or white tops with navy blue bottoms or jeans. Shirts are not required to be tucked in, but the hem cannot go past the student's wrist when their arms are straight at their sides. Only white undershirts may be visible, and must pass the length test. Girls are allowed to wear navy blue or jean skirts, but the hem must reach the tips of their fingers when their arms are straight at their sides. Students must also wear close-toed shoes. If a student refuses to follow the uniform guidelines, then they may be sent to the office to get a "loaner" uniform.

Long Beach Unified School District School Uniform Policy, adopted in January 18, 1994, "suggests" students wear uniforms. It is not mandatory, and the parent of the student may exempt the child from uniform guidelines.

TAP Program

The Talent Achievement Program (TAP) is the most academically challenging program offered at Hughes, with separate classes for all of the core subjects but math. The TAP staff is composed of 14 teachers, more than half of which have master's degrees.

Hughes began TAP in the mid-1970's. The Long Beach Unified School District chose Hughes to pioneer its GATE program for middle school students.
