The AVA encompasses the entire
Puget Sound area from theCanadian border to just south of Olympia. T. Parker "Discovering Washington Wines" pg 49 Raconteurs Press 2002 ISBN 0971925852 ]Rainfall in the Puget Sound AVA ranges from convert|15|in|cm|0 to convert|60|in|cm|0 annually, which is similar to many
Europe an grape growing areas and theWillamette Valley AVA in Oregon. Most of that rainfall occurs in the winter time. Summers are mild, sunny and dry.Irrigation is a necessity in some of the drier locations. The AVA is suited to cool climate varieties such asMadeleine Angevine ,Madeline Sylvaner ,Muller-Thurgau andSiegerrebe with some clonal varieties ofPinot Noir andPinot Gris andChardonnay growing well in warmer locations. Many new varieties show promise and are being tested at theWashington State University Mount Vernon Agricultural Research Station . Those includeRegent ,Zweigelt ,Dornfelder andGaranoir .fact|date=January 2008History
One of the earliest recorded plantings in the Puget Sound area was done in 1872 by an
